May 2020 is the 39th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 563,909 units when compared to the PlayStation 4 during the same timeframe. In the last 12 months the Switch has outsold the PlayStation 4 by 5.00 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the PlayStation 4 by 2.66 million units.

The PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

The 39th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is May 2020, while for the PlayStation 4 it is January 2017. The Switch has sold 57.53 million units, while the PlayStation 4 sold 54.87 million units during the same timeframe.

Really comes down now to legs; will Switch be able to maintain momentum over the next three years, or will it lose steam?

Personally I expect PS4 to have the better legs and come out on top eventually, but you never know.

The 3DS and Wii U have sold 88.84 million units lifetime through March 2020. The Switch is 31.21 million units behind the 3DS and Wii U. The Wii U has been off the market for several years only selling 13.56 million units lifetime, while the 3DS has sold 75.28 million units to date and is now selling under 10,000 units per week.

Booya. Unifying their console and handheld branches is paying off handsomely.

3DS + Wii U won't make it to 90 million, (so less than 36 million from here on out in the launch aligned comparison) while Switch should pass that by the end of next year.

The PS3 sold 10.47 million units lifetime in Japan. The PS4 is currently 1.34 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS3.

Neck and neck still, but given PS4 got much better Japanese support than PS3 (namely mainline Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest) and sold much better globally, a mediocre result.

Switch vs 3DS in Japan Sales Comparison – Switch Closes the Gap in May 2020

Switch Vs. 3DS Japan:

Total Lead: 1,963,006 – 3DS

The 39th month for the Switch is May 2020, while for the 3DS it is April 2014. The Switch has sold 13.60 million units, while the 3DS sold 15.67 million units during the same timeframe.

3DS had already peaked a couple of years ago by this point.  Meanwhile Switch is currently outpacing itself YoY by a massive amount in Japan.  It's already up over 1 million.  If Switch can keep up the pace then it will catch 3DS in Japan by the end of the year.

Yeah I reckon this will be a tortoise and the hare situation, with Switch having better legs than 3DS.

Well, the old double helix is well and truly broken at this point; even the downswing in Switch's lead (first graph) that usually comes after each peak has been reversed. Switch will win this one I think.

Switch has this in the bag, it'll overtake before the end of next year.

The foreign invader continues to gain ground on Xbone's last stand on its home turf; even in the US where it reigned supreme just last gen, it is destined for third place.

It can scarcely be overstated how big a blunder the 'bone was for the Xbox brand.

A blunder, sure. But not nearly as big of a blunder as the Wii U, PS Vita or Sega Saturn.

True, but still a pretty dand sizeable one, with over 30 million of their 360 userbase lost.
