Forums - Gaming Discussion - Holy Crap Dead Cells!

Alright I know it's been out for a while, but I finally just started playing my copy of Dead Cells yesterday, like a year after buying it (dat backlog!) and oh my god I did not expect it to be this good!

I've only played 4 hours so far, so I guess I'll see how replayable it is once I've put in a lot more hours. But so far it feels like pretty much the ultimate 2D side scrolling action slashing game.

Love the procedural generation changes the play each time, the fighting is soooo fun and very skill based, love how you you gradually get better through both skill and permanent unlockables, the pixel graphics are gorgeous, the difficulty is fantastic hard but not frustrating and I find on each new run for the most part I get a little bit further.

I'm just a bit blown away by how good this game is. Haven't been this blown away by a game since Axiom Verge back in 2017, but I think I already like Dead Cells more. Anyone else care to join the love fest?

Haven't played it in a long while, but I was addicted to it for a good 3 months or so. Amazing game.

I just started playing Dead Cells a few days ago myself. My first impression is also very good. I hope it holds up. Also I really liked Axiom Verge a lot too.

I absolutely hate roguelite games but this was actually pretty good.

One of the best indies this gen, to me its in the top5. Had an absolute blast playing it when it came out and came back to it after The Giant patch came out. Loved it.

What does the term "roguelite" mean?

I think he meant rouguelike.  Typically roguelikes are procedural generated dungeon crawlers where you customize your character through acquiring powerups which you lose upon death, and when you die you have to start over from the beginning.  Dead Cells and Binding of Isaac are probably the most prominent examples I can think of.  I think Hollowknight too, but I haven't played that.

Noun

rogue-lite (plural rogue-lites)

  1. (video games) Any of a genre of video games that take certain elements from roguelikes (such as procedurally-generated game content) but typically have more complex visuals and require less strategy to play.

What is Dead Cells?

In your defense, Wikipedia does call Dead Cells a roguelike, but that's Wikipedia for you...

Well then, I stand corrected. Thanks.

It's a genre I don't think I've ever played. I did play Hollow Knight. Might give this one a try. I'm pretty sure it's on Xbox Game Pass.
