Forums - Sales Discussion - Global Hardware 11 April 2020 - Final Fantasy VII Remake, Switch Shortages

Still it is quite good to still make 4k after being finished for over 1 year, but the point was more like the market decides when the HW ended selling not the company.

You're so right in this...

Nintendo wasn't shipping based on demand, that's an assumption on how fast it went out of stock in several amazon sites and not a single-one deal on black friday 2019! Where was the 99$ NEW 2DXL? That could prove to be a boost to NS , in the long run...

That was  undoubtly a  financially sustainable sale! Probably, they didn't want to raise the production of such an old piece of hardware, in spite of a recent revision, being fully committed to NS production.

Kudos to Sony, which always meets the demand of its every obsolete gaming console, till the end of the consumer interest in it ( I Will never forget the abrupt transition from wii to wiiu).

Different philosophies I guess, Sony kept selling PS1 and PS2 long after successor and had good sales, PS3 not so much. Waiting to see what will happen with PS4.

Why the 600k difference suddenly for the Switch ?

Heh, these are crazy times.  Just look what kind of difference one week can make.

Last Week This Week % Change
PS4          159,783          325,988 104%
Switch          396,479          147,832 -63%
XB1            53,615            47,191 -12%
3DS              4,251              4,431 4%

XB1 and 3DS are stable =p

Would love to see some users that say Sony only sell 100M consoles because they keep the system selling forever until they reach that number calculating how many weeks would take for 3DS to reach 100M with 4k per week. A great system but its time is about finished =[

Who says this?

PS2 - 157m
PS4 - 108m
PS1 - 102m
PS3 -   87m
PSP -   81m
PSV -   16m

Wasn't expecting Switch to drop so much and PS4 to increase so much so late even with FFVIIR, that can be considered a system seller.

The Switch sold 1.8m consoles in a 3 week period.  That tends to exhaust supply especially when a pandemic is affecting the global supply chain.  They are completely sold out online at Gamestop, Best Buy, & Target.  There are used Nintendo Switches listed on Amazon & Walmart for about $200 over the $299 MSRP proving it is a hard commodity to come buy even for the people who would have otherwise bought one.

Yep it sold tremendously well, that is why I found the drop quite abrupt, like the inventory exhausted at once.

Azzanation is pretty adamant of it.

Well, there were 3 cases of it selling over 100m, and 3 cases of it not.  So, it's a silly argument.

What's on the shelves will only last so long.  2 million units in the supply chain is usually a good amount at any given time.  The combination of the huge Animal Crossing release & people in lockdown having a ton of time on their hands, led to that stock blowing out in a 3 week span.  Combine that with difficulty resupplying due to the pandemic's effect on manufacturing in Asia and huge sales numbers had to crash once that stockpile had been exhausted.  I think there were warnings from analysts during the peak number sales weeks that the available stock was dwindling, so it wasn't that unexpected.

Yes I have seem the reports and threads discussing the resupplying issues, I've seem Japan having stock deficts and all. So I expected to see a continuous decline (due to some areas being without stock before others) but from VGC numbers it seems like it more or less occured at once.
