Yeah, well thats why theres no one coming here seeking the Norwegian Dream.

Why would somebody come her for the Norwegian dream?  What kind of point is that?  Also, on that 60% figure, I hear that thrown around all the time.  You do understand that nobody is ever taxed that high right?  The rich have lobbied for tax breaks and loopholes all over the place. They may be expected to pay something like that, but the by the time they have put in all their deductions and credits, they usually are down to 10-20%.  Just look at Romney’s tax returns.

I live in Norway. My point is that theres a reason why theres an American Dream and not a Norwegian one.

Anyway, if they usually pay about 10-20%, then tax them around that. Then slowly increase it over time. You cant just take what we in Scandinavia have done since forever and just dump it on the US. It would be riots in the streets...well...more riots in the streets.

the 60% figure is not about income tax. Is about combined tax including income tax, assets tax, sales taxes and other. On that front your own country stands at 62% and Sweden even higher at 76%.

That doesn't make any sense. First of all, because the "Norwegian Dream" is not a real thing; the "American Dream" is a propagandist slogan created by the US-American government, something that wasn't replicated by the Norwegian government. And secondly, Norway is the 3rd European country by net migration per capita, and 9th overall, having a greater net migration than any American country (three times greater than the US, btw). So in one sense you could say a lot of people are indeed seeking the Norwegian Dream.

And as a result those that come are more informed and less likely to be because of an emotional response to a myth. So many comes to the us to live the so called "american dream", but the vast majority of them end up in the american nightmare, arguably in great part because the rich are not paying enough taxes.

That's an issue of marketing. The "American Dream" is basically that you can start out at the bottom and end up at the top which is a question of income mobility. Norwegian countries rank much higher for that than the US.

Yeah, leave out the illegals entering the US in the millions. But it doesnt matter anyway since you decided the American Dream is a myth.

No, but you cant tax rich people 60% like Biden wants either. Not in the US. They just wont stand for it or find ways to pay less. Keep the tax lower and they will pay all of it instead of a fraction of it. Its still way above what regular people will ever pay.

What exactly would they do about it? If the US were to bring in a 60% tax for people earning over $1m or something (with no loopholes to pay less) then they'd pay it.

Their only choices would be to pay it, or to cease doing business in the US entirely. And when you can either keep 40% of the money you earn, or earn 0%, it's kind of an easy choice.

I don't know what your taxes are like at the moment, or how big a job that would be/how likely it is. But my point is if such a thing were to happen, then there's not fuck all "rich people" could do about it.

I dont know what they would do. Many would probably take their business elsewhere. Thats why many have their businesses in China because its more expensive in the US. People will always find options when you try to screw them over. You think the rich in Norway really pay 62%? That would be crazy.

How exactly would you take a business selling to Americans elsewhere? You'd still be taxed by America because you'd still be making your money in America, regardless of where your headquarters are (or at least you should be, assuming there's no silly loopholes).

If you could set up a business anywhere and pay the local tax rates instead of paying tax to the country you're making money from (eg. America) then there already wouldn't be many businesses there since there are plenty of countries with lower tax rates than the US already.

Well thats an example of lower manufacturing costs. So you wont have to pay taxes and manufacturing in the US. That means less jobs for Americans. And people do business in the US because they have ways to pay less tax. If you slap them with a mandatory 60%, then they might absolutely take their business elsewhere. You leave them no choice. Its that or they close up shop. Unless they are Amazon or something, but Im sure even they would figure something out.

Well, the number of illegal immigrants in the US has peaked in 2007 and has been decreasing since, so it wouldn't really increase the USA's net migration.

I haven't "decided" that the American Dream is a myth. It is a myth by definition, an ethos. It's propaganda, it's a belief and a hope, not a social phenomenon. The American Dream promises mobility, freedom and equality, and the US is not even close to being the best country in ANY of those categories. And if you want to call America's standards of social mobility, freedom and equality the "American Dream", then it's also present (and improved) in dozens of other countries.

Well name one country as diverse as the US? Its a unique country. The American Dream is based on that anyone can come there and make something of themselves. It has a rich history of people from all over the world coming there and building a better life. No other country has that history. It might not always work out obviously, but thats true for any country.

Oh boy. There's a couple people that I have learned to ignore thanks to this thread. I had no idea that two forum members in this thread had such terrible political ideas. Makes sense that they both love Xbox all the time too. I'll be taking their Xbox comments with a hearty laugh from here on out.
