It's going to get worse for a while. Despite all the warnings and 'fear mongering' people partied and went on holiday

"We do know that there was a significant amount of transmission that occurred around Christmas time, and unfortunately with New Year's being just about a week [after], you're at your most infectious. And at that point you can get almost this -- for lack of a better phrase -- double whammy, and I do think January unfortunately is going to be a bit of a bumpy ride for us in health care," Chakrabarti said.

The pontiff said Sunday he was "saddened" by news reports claiming that people were flying abroad to have fun amid the pandemic.

"They are good people, but they didn't think about those who were staying at home, of the economic problems of many people who have been hit hard by the lockdown, of the sick people," Pope Francis said Sunday.

"[They thought] only about going on holiday and having fun. This pained me a lot," the Pope said at the end of his Sunday Angelus prayer.

The lock downs are only necessary because people get 'tired' of doing the right thing. Fun 1st, Creature comforts 2nd, Empathy last. It all works towards bringing the economy further into a regression. Burn the house down to stay warm.

Imagine if it was as deadly to 20 and 30 year olds like the 1918 flu. That was dropping young adults like flies. We would probably be over 10 million dead worldwide or more.

nvm.

Got it mixed up with the spanish flu, that wasnt so awefull.
The 1918 flu was bad (17 million+ deaths bad, and mortality rate likely over 4%).

Still people downplay Covid19 (mortality rate 1,5% or so? and likely over 2m deaths so far).
Its gonna be the worst pandemic since 1889, apart from the 1918 flu.

Would be surprised if before covid19 is done, it hits 4m+ deaths.
(I dont think 2021 is the year we beat it, might still be around till 2022 imo)

@RolStoppable The uncoordinated mess is back because of democracy and too many cooks in the kitchen. Our PM wanted to lock down before Christmas, yet over ruled by the cabinet. People need to have their gatherings. So now we have a big uptick from those gatherings and then all those newly infected people need to have their new years parties. Result, lock downs will have to last much longer now.

Making the hard decisions doesn't make you popular, trying to please everyone makes it worse over all. It's actually quite similar to what happened with Cyberpunk.

The medical and technology in 1918 are the same as today?

Online schooling is a mess as expected. Everything is crashing today, Bright Space, One Note, etc. The whole province is now home for online schooling. Servers are overloaded, kids are frustrated, teachers don't know what to do. Great start of the new year!

Nope but at least they got rid of communal drinking cups and mask wearing wasn't as politicized.

Mask wearing is absolute in Vietnam, one of the most important things we used to fight back covid 19 since january 2020.

RIP Ireland, what is going on there??? The went from 218 cases Dec 9 to over 6,000 yesterday.

Little round-up from the past few days:

- UK extends lockdown until March:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/coronavirus-news-covid-vaccine-oxford-schools-uk-closed-national/

The longest single lockdown announcement yet?

- Germany extends lockdown until Jan 31st.
https://www.thelocal.de/20210105/germany-to-prolong-lockdown-measures-as-covid-19-deaths-surge

Expected really. The previous length (Dec 16th to Jan 10th) just wasn't long enough, especially considering Christmas time and the start of the new year.

- In France, only 516 people were vaccinated in the first six days:

Wtf are they doing? But it gets worse...

- The Netherlands hasn't even started yet. (start is Wednesday which is two days earlier than they initially planned)
