Forums - General Discussion - Coronavirus (COVID-19) Discussion Thread

A recently published study in Cell Press is the first I'm aware of that confirms the hypothesis that B and T lymphocytes from people who had a confirmed previous common cold coronavirus infection have a significant reaction against SARS-CoV-2.

The theorized 60 - 70% of people who needed to be infected might need to be revised to a much lower number, perhaps no more than 10 - 20% globally (although with significant heterogeneous distribution, that is to say, some populations will be more vulnerable than others).

This might also explain why it's burning so slowly in some places and so rapidly in others, since it will directly affect the virus' reproductive number.

Edit - it also means if only anyone had a SARS vaccine ready, we wouldn't be going through any of this, since the two are effectively the same virus for all of your immune system's intents and purposes. In a way, SARS completely vanishing, instead of popping up here and there like Ebola and prompting vaccine efforts, was a bad thing in retrospect.

Offical politics thread or official protest thread?

Hmm, either I guess. I was thinking politics because this isn't specifically in relation to these specific protests, but whatever you want. I've been keeping up with both of them.

Sundin, go easy on John, he's under a lot of stress these days. Right John?

Went out for a walk and its like there's no pandemic. Barely anyone with a mask. Also I've seen so many large group of friends mot social distancing.

Same here, it's all very weird.

I had to pick up something at a store today. I take full precautions, arrive, wash hands, put on a face mask and go stand in line at the designated markers. All employees were wearing masks as well, none of the other customers were. I show my pickup form and get to follow the green line through the store to stand on another marker at the collection point.

There one employee sits at the end of a long table with the credit card machine and sanitizer on the other end. The guy in front of me doesn't use the hand sanitizer and fiddles all over with the machine.... I put my card down, wash my hands first, stick the card in, hit the buttons, wash my hands again before taking the card back out and putting it back in my pocket.

The employee slides the box over on the floor, I pick it up and carry it back out along the designated path out the store, put it in the trunk. Wash my hands before taking the face mask off and again after, before starting the car. The box is now in the basement in 'quarantine' just to be sure. I'm not taking any risks with what this can do to my wife.

However on the way back, parking lots full at coffee shops (Tim Hortons) and since you can't sit inside, people hang out together in the parking lot. same at the fry stand next to it. Meanwhile people were unloading canoes in groups to go down the river, people floating by together in rafts, walking together, hanging out in the yard. There's still a 5 people (from the same family) limit here, but it doesn't look like anyone cares anymore. And so we keep the virus going and put the economy further down the toilet.

Shops and restaurants etc are doing their part, the general public is not.

A guy recognized me because we used to be neighbors.  He had no masks and wanted to shake hands. I ended up shaking hands because i didn't want to be an ass. Had to wipe my hands with sanitizer afterwards.

It's hard to unlearn that but should be unlearned. I never liked the handshake nonsense anyway and am glad to be out of the Netherlands with the triple kiss on the cheek... https://www.invadingholland.com/guides-to-holland/the-three-kiss-rule

A couple weeks back I fell back in the old, hold the door open for the next person. You can't stay 2 meters apart when you do that (hence most stores direct you out through a different exit if they have them) I also wonder about when people cover their hands with their sleeves or use their arms to open the door, do they wash their clothes after? Might as well use one hand for doors etc then use sanitizer in the car before touching anything with that hand.

Hospitalizations lag behind, but will also be fewer when better protecting nursing homes.

I'm not so sure if the increase will go back down quickly. It will go down a bit but maybe not to previous levels. That computer glitch might will have hidden a stable increase in infections. Mobility rates have gone up a bit since last time I checked.

Re-opening too soon before the infections are down to a low enough level and you end up staying at the same level or increasing again.

The computer glitch was in stockholm, that backlog that glitch caused all belongs to Stockholm, I see worldometer is reporting 114 cases for us yesterday, the media here says 948 cases, worldometer must be using bad source.

Our increase isn't because of the computer glitch from the look of it. The confirmed cases are growing in Västra Götaland where our second biggest city lies (Gothenburg).

But I don't think the spread of the virus is increasing, if you read one of my previous post, we are doing a lot more testing. In beginning of April we were doing 20k tests a week we now doing 36k tests a week.

500 Cases for Ontario isn't that much, I'm not sure why you guys are so careful, population is over 14 million over there. Västra Götaland only 1.7 million people :)

I don't think we will get a second big wave. Masks and distancing is just too effective. If I had to make a guess I'd say that if full lockdown prevents 100% of spread then mandatory masks and distancing are about 80% effective. Coupled with very few active cases it's gonna be really easy to keep going down in cases while having economy up at 90%.

Of course this won't work well in stupid countries where measures are eased before getting active cases down at all.

Basically every nation in europe has had these sympathy support protests for america.
Their not nearly as big as the ones in the US, and their all peacefull, but yes.
Pretty sure even sweden had some.

Unfortunately they're not all peaceful, I seen Antifa firebomb the US embassy in Greece and right now the UK protests were kicking off. I googled sweden protests and indeed they has some, I was greeted with a huge cop throwing a dainty female across a lobby of some sort. Seems Antifa havm't had as mich success in Europe but it's still early in the summer and next week anothrr heatwave comes.

The Antifa is the one to blame for everything agenda is misplaced.

Apparently the FBI investigated and found no link to Antifa and the violence of the protests in the USA.
(they did this just before Trump came out and blamed it all on the left extremists of antifa)
There was a "leak" to a journalist (just after Trump blamed them) (i forget the name) (but a big one, known for getting leaks and posting them)

Trump just needs a scape goat. So its Antifa, even if its factually not correct (by FBI investigations).

You know what the FBI did find?
They found that there was actually a fake Tweeter account, claiming to be Antifa (and promoteing violence) that was infact not antifa, but run by a extreme far right white power group.  Guess who noticed this fake account and quoted it? Ivanka trump.  Then suddenly Trump is blameing Antifa for it afterwards.

The fact is Trump was fooled by a fake twetter account, but since he needed a fall guy or someone to blame (not from his side of the fence), hes more than fine promoteing a lie.

So its one thing Trump does it (i have no faith in his character, mortality, ect).
Then you come here on the forums and theres people promoteing his made up bullcrap....
Are you guys that easily fooled? or just want to believe its all antifa's fault theres rioting and looting? (even if investigations show its not?)
(ei. you wish for the lie to be true, so you keep spreading it?)

I'll @ you on whatever one is most appropriate in thr morning. Oh and by the way, I'm not on the right just so you know, we don't have thar divide here and if you want to know where I fall politically, I'm left of center towards libertarianism, two squarea to the right of Mandela and one square up in this compass test...

I feel like I need to post this video for more information on that political map and where the US stands there, including all the candidates for the 2020 presidential race:
