TLOU #2 lol

Ok, lol...not one but TWO Zelda games make it in the top 10 and you are still complaining about the list? WAY better than having a top 10 full of Nintendo games. Sorry, but that's just a FACT. There's probably 10X more users taking part in this poll (if not more) than 70-80 users here that are mostly Nintendo devoted, as well.
No matter how you put it, I happen to think this list speaks more to how the list would look like when you broaden the audience. Nothing can truly give an accurate look as to what is the best game, but I still think this list is more representative as a whole than VGchartz. And that's just me, but yeah...of course a lot of new games will be on there. Recently we have seen a lot of masterpieces with the likes of Skyrim, The Last of Us, The Witcher 3, Zelda BOTW - each having their loyal fanbase. I may not agree with it, but I at least respect the fact no doubt The Witcher is a very loved franchise and has a strong, devoted following.
Not to mention, you still have the SAME games ranking high there as you do here - FFVI, FFVII, Chrono Trigger, Shadow of the Colossus, Zelda OOT and BOTW - save for some of the Mario games which took a little dive but are still there. When you got more than just Nintendo fans having their say, then yeah, things will be looking quite different. Things become looking a little bit more "down to earth" as you might say.

Both lists are biased, but they are biased in different ways. They are both decent lists, but neither one is particularly great. Our site's rankings are very pro-Nintendo, because many of the Sony fans here have trouble picking 50 games that they really like, so it ends up being pro-Nintendo. Game Informer is also biased, because Gamestop customers tend to be younger Playstation/XBox gamers. It's both anti-Nintendo and heavily biased toward recent games. I've seen plenty of these "top games of all time" lists on various sites and almost all of them are biased in some way. That is just the nature of it.
The best, and least-biased list I've seen as a whole is from Retro Gamer magazine. Retro gamers have actually played plenty of older games, but since they are still reading a gaming mag that means most of them are still playing games today. Here is a post I found from Jan. 2016. It's a pretty good list as long as you consider the past 4 years of games aren't included. (There is probably a more up to date list if someone has a more recent issue.)

You need to get off VGChartz and out in the real world once in awhile.
You'll see that opinions are more varied than in this Nintendo hivemind.

What do you recommend? N4G? |
I wouldn't call N4G "real world" either, no.

Let me rephrase: "You need to meet other people than die-hard Nintendo fans if you wish to understand why top 50 isn't solely Nintendo games".

Uh-huh... that's a statement based on a false premise. For one, I don't have a problem with a top 50 not exclusively consisting of Nintendo games, and two, not even a collective of die-hard Nintendo fans would have a Nintendo-exclusive top 50. The reason why the Game Informer list isn't good is that it skews too heavily to recent PS and Xbox games. It swaps the overrepresentation of Nintendo games on the VGC list for underrepresentation of Nintendo games. By the way, last year we managed to figure out why the VGC lists have been so Nintendo-heavy. It's because the hosts had been using a points system to skew the results in favor of Nintendo games. So the main culprit for the results were actually not PS and Xbox fans prefering to complain about the results instead of participating in the event; sure, those people remain a factor, but most of the blame has to be put on the rigged points system. |
Ok.

A lot of stuff from before then didn't age too well. Especially not games from the first 3D consoles. I have all my old games from that era, and once you go back to play them today the rose colored glasses come off. I would recommend 9 NES games, 10 SNES games, 10 Genesis Games, 10 N64 games, and 11 PS1 games to the modern gamer. Lots of other stuff from that era is good, but totally skippable IMO.
