Can we stop calling all things we disagree with, or don't like, woke? The Fenix family not being the centerpiece of the story anymore, after already being that for a whole trilogy, isn't "woke." Creating conflict between characters for differing opinions over brutal decisions during times of high stress, isn't "woke." Shining a spotlight on the COG not always being exactly the best entity in the world, as all Gears games have done to varying degrees btw, to add more interesting layers to the story beyond "humans good, ugly aliens bad," isn't "woke."

Fully agreed, whether we dislike a game moving away from a certain character or not isn't woke, do we have to like it? No, I wouldn't like if they moved away from Chief in Halo for example but that doesn't make the game woke. People having different opinions and conflict between characters actually makes things more interesting and IIRC the COG has done their fair share of shitty things across the OG Gears trilogy along with inside the extended media such as books, am I remembering correctly that they treated women like shit? Did they literally not create breeding farms? Am I remembering that right?

Besides I don't think Gears painted one side worse than the other, there was a lot of back and forth, it was basically saying both COG and UIR have done their fair share of shitty things, it's no different than pointing out how morally fucked it is in Halo for example that the UNSC literally kidnapped children and forced them to undergo augmentation to become Spartans, desperate times cause people to do some truly fucked up shit.

I will just address the “breeding farms”. Yes that is true. The whole idea is that the human population had a 99% fatality rate since the locust war. About 10 000 humans or so survived Gears 3. The COG needed to get numbers up, so they made women give birth with their husbands, recover, and get pregnant again.

The fascinating aspect about this universe is that brutal choices are made in times of war. The situation isn’t fair, progressive, or even a choice for females. But if not for that there wouldn’t likely be much of a next generation by the time Gears 4 came along. Even the fertility program is the highest priority in the COG, they need numbers to reclaim the planet, it’s a simple yet brutal truth.

I'm okay with them side-lining old characters in Gears but don't touch my Master Chief in Halo. I would say though Gears was far more than just Marcus saving the world, it was his whole band of bros whereas Halo is mostly Chief soloing everything, Gears better utilised it's side characters and was a much better transition to replacing the old characters than whatever Halo 5's attempt was.

I on some level that was MS tried to do in Halo 5, and it ended up biting them in the ass. Fire team Osiris was as diverse as a team could get, but ironically the most liked member was Buck ;) By contrast we didn’t even see Blue Teams faces, which was a big bummer.

Im all for diversity and inclusivity, but as a fan I draw the line at doing so at the expense of sidelining the core characters

Yeah if not for these things, the Breeding Program, the Spartan Program, humanity would not exist, we can't really debate that but I do find it an interesting debate about whether it was the right thing to do and what better time to ask that question in a post-war era? My Gears knowledge is rusty but I liked in Halo it seemed like ONI was beginning to get called out about their children kidnapping and them trying to cover it up, ONI is a shady corporation overall who has done numerous shady things and morally it is fucked up what they did, was it worth it? It's definitely a stain on humanity to go that low but they'd be no humanity without it, I personally find it an interesting series of questions to explore.

Exactly, we’ll said. In these sci fi worlds, you can do the morally right thing and perish. Or you can make the hard calls, live with the guilt, but serve a greater good. It’s the eternal grey area that really draws me into Halo and Gears.

Can I just ask wth is woke about Gears?

There's a woman in it and she spends the entire game with her clothes on!!

Ok so it looks like I stirred the pot somewhat by agreeing about Gears 5 being "woke". Now, I must point out I'm not sure of the exact definition by it, but for example, Rod Ferguson himself said they went for diversity for divertivity's sake (Not using this exact wording mind you) when writing characters.

And you get the feeling Kait was made a lead character just to have a female lead. The whole story revolves around her, original trilogy was Marcus and his squad fighting a war. It was more about the war against Locust. Just better and more genuine writing all along.

And of course, smoking is baaaad.

Anyway, being "woke" or not was not the biggest issue of Gears 5.

Give us some damn Xbox news! We're debating about the wokeness of Gears FFS! Save us Phil!

I'm getting tired of this cat and mouse game Sony/Microsoft are playing, both of them waiting for each other to go first, I wish Microsoft would just reveal the specs and do the price at E3.

Give it time!! The consoles don't release for another nine months. Worst case scenario we will learn more by June at E3 for Xbox Series X.

It could be worse, all the PS fans know now is the font style of the logo. I’m counting our blessings :)

I agree his writing wasn’t good, but maybe I’m just paranoid  he was sidelined for most of the game and subsequently shamed by his best friends. Character writing can always be improved. But my other points I fully stand behind

They were simply trying to cause conflict for the purposes of the story and it makes far more sense that JD would do something like that than Del. Besides if Del did it nobody would care because brutally honest he's the unimportant side kick comedy relief character, sorry Del fans but it's true. Maybe he'll have a bigger role in the future though.

Fenix is very much a significant part of the story though and judging from the ending of Gears 5 he'll be an even bigger part in Gears 6.

What's considered to be the canon ending in Gears 5 ?

The one everybody picked, Del dying :P

I picked for Del to live as well.
