Just beat Sunset Overdrive.
As previously mentioned it took me a long long veeery long time to appreciate this game. I was dying constantly at the beginning of the game and due to the limited traversal abilities it really wasn't much fun at first. That changed after 2-3h playtime.
When you get used to it the game can be pretty fun. There's a good bit of humour in the game and the missions are designed quite well for the most part.
Boss fights are far too easy though and thus anticlimactic.
I'm not a big fan of the weapons honestly. While there's a decent amount of unique ones, a lot are pretty underwhelming. Either enemies are dying in one hit or they are incredibly tanky. Even when using the best guns against them it will take a while for them to die, so you better just melee them.
Even when "mastering" the game, I think you can die far too quickly in some instances. Usually there's enough health boxes lying around but when you're at very low health, it seems like you can't find any. I noticed that some enemies will drop health when they are dead but I could never predict why and when that will happen.
Next we're talking Amps and Overdrives. IMO both are pretty useless. Some Amps can have nice effects but honestly 90% of enemies are dying with one hit already, so there's no point for an extra effect other than it looking cool. I was even more disappointed by the Overdrives as they barely have any use. On level 1 the effect is not noticeable at all. 5% more damage for one weapon type? Again, most enemies already die in one hit and the tanky ones can literally take 100 hits. So instead of 100 I only need 96 hits now. Fantastic. The overdrives for ammo capacity are alright but only because you're not given enough ammo capacity for most weapons.
I'm also not a fan of the defend-the-points-missions in this game as I think the traps are quite poor and you can't really build a lot of them. There are quite a few mandatory ones and why do you have to do this? To get Amps that suck as previously explained.
Visually it's quite alright. Due to the cartoony look it doesn't need to have awesome textures and stuff like that. Obviously a bit blurry on my Xbox One X but compared to many other games from the pre X era, it's still good to look at.
The story is pretty goofy but that's okay in this case as it isn't meant to be taken seriously. Main story isn't too long though. I finished the game in 9 hours flat but that includes some side quests and going for collectibles. I'd say its around 7h 30min to 8h. However, there are quite a few side quests to complete and it got a few DLCs to increase its length.
The DLCs are next on my list and then we'll see how many more achievements I can unlock. I'm definitely not going for all the collectibles though. There are almost 1000 of them in the game.
8/10
