The 360 with all its diverse content barely sold at all in Japan. Its not the content its the mentality of the place you are trying to sell. Building one studio isn't going to get you huge system sells in Japan. Spending all your capital on chasing that white rabbit probably isn't going to do that either since it was tried and failed. Instead understand the market and the purchase habits of Japanese consumers which would be a better investment. I believe GP has a good chance once MS get their mobile strategy going because mobile rules in Japan. Here is how I see the market and the competition. Sony new service is more about combating MS GP but not in the way most believe. Sony wants to take away MS ability to get niche Japanese games like Scarlet Nexus and others by giving those devs the same deal to be on Sony new PS+ sub. Sony has a huge market advantage in this area and being a Japanese company they are going to snatch up all those opportunities. MS trying to fight Sony in an area where they have the complete advantage is a waste of resources, instead they need to venture into the markets that are maturing and snatch up those games. Become the main presence in those areas and when they start to pump out AAA quality content, you are then the go to system of choice. Japan is way to mature in their direction and with 2 dominate OEMs in Sony and Nintendo to really make any real dent. Yes, MS should keep strong relations with the big Dev studios and publishers as you want those games to continue to be made for your system but from now on, getting those niche games are going to be rough because Sony is going to make a real big effort to suppress any of those deals. When you start to see day one releases of Japanese games on Sony PS+ system you will know that its was probably an opportunity MS lost because Sony is the biggest dog in the yard. |
You are not reading what I said. I litterally mention how SFII was a Japanes game that did amazing in NA, magazines were full with letters who where choosing to get a Snes for SFII instead of an Genesis/MD and we now have an year that a third party Japanese game became the fastest selling in NA but maybe not reach top 30 in Japan for the year. You also make a point in my favor because the 360 maybe barely sold in Japan thanks to its diverse content it became the best selling Xbox.
And the next part is exactly why you should start invest in your own companies and make your own games.
Voted New Ip, I would rather have Inxile make Shadowrun than Arkane. But if a AAA Shadowrun is going to be made (hinted by Grubb) then I hope that it’s in 3rd Person we have way to many games in the 1st person perspective already especially in the RPG space.

???? Holiday? Moved? Lol. |
Only for three weeks. I'm currently in NYC. No Xbox for me during that time :/
Guess I'm not missing out on anything right now.
At least I'll be back just in time for the MS show.

What an idiotic move. Marvel approaches both, Phil turns him down, while Sony signs a Spider-Man deal which goes on to sell 20m+ copies lifetime, more than any Xbox exclusive sold this past gen. What a poor decision right out the gate by Phil when he took command of the Xbox division in 2014. Hopefully his position has changed since then, now that we've got Bethesda working on Indiana Jones and possibly a Star Wars game as well. |
Sony owns Spider-Man. That's why almost every Spider-Man game has been PS exclusive, not just that one title.

It isn't idiotic, SE probably payed a ton for the licensers to the avengers GoTG and now they have sold the devs because it barely made money.

Sony owns the movie rights to Spider-Man. Not anything else. Marvel approached Xbox and Sony about a game. Xbox declined and Insomniac was asked which Marvel character they would like to make a game on, and they chose Spider-Man. And it’s blossomed from there that’s now added Wolverine.

I see. Choosing the right developers still seems most important in these deals, otherwise you just lose money like SE. Even if the Xbox division of that time made a deal, it's no guarantee they would've had/chosen the right team or given them enough creative freedom to make a great game.

Yeah and after playing Spider-Man, I could definitely see Insomniac used inspiration from Sunset Overdrive which I LOVED! So it was a pretty natural fit. Looking at Xbox in 2014, they were still overcoming the disastrous launch of the XOne and the only first party studios were 343, Coalition, Turn 10, and had just acquired Mojang lol not much strong contenders for a Marvel game at the time. Although I could see Coalition making something like a Hulk game!

Well, Avengers failing and the poor E3 unveil for GotG ultimately hurt it. And it wasn't these IP's alone that forced SE to sell off the studios: Tomb Raider and Deus Ex were pulling in low profit numbers to begin with.
Well, teh fact that Insomniac weren't 1st party is probably what made them a good candidate for Sony: their own studios were already busy working on stuff and Insomniac had the manpower to get to work on a game. MS could've utilised their parter studios, but I have no idea who that would've been at the time. |
MS also could have given it to Insomniac lol, Sunset Overdrive released in 2014.
