44. SaGa Frontier

First Played (2011)

Times Completed: 1

This game is huge, maybe to a fault as it doesn’t seem very popular. But when I made a US account on my PS3 to play those PS1 games that never made it to the UK, this was a huge surprise. I already enjoyed the sequel and even the much maligned Unlimited Saga on PS2, but this game is the height of the Saga series for me. The game is enormous with 7 different characters, each with their own story, though there is some repetition as stories cross over. The ambition and open ended nature of the game really appeals to me and I never wanted this game to end. Like with most SaGa games, I enjoy the level up system, or the replacement of one, it's basically an adaptation of the system used in FF2 (which I also enjoyed). Just like most Square games, the music is great and I always have a soft spot for pre-rendered graphics from this generation so the game looks wonderful to me.

This is a great game. This is one of the first games I got after getting FF7 on PS1.

#45: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

The Prime series is excellent all around, the Wii title while not as good as the first in my mind it was very satisfying to play. Motion control aiming, some fun motion related additions (like whipping off shields with the grappling beam) and bosses with more personality than usually found in the Metroid series were highlights. I quite liked the multiple planets to explore and getting a conclusion to the trilogy (until Metroid Prime 4 arrives in 2025).

#43 The Classic JRPG outside Nintendo Domain, second time

Phantasy Star II?

#42  modern Japan in a strange RPG

Gonna say this has to do with SMT or Persona, but not 100% sure.

#41 The rare platform kinda is back but is the first one.

Yooka-Laylee. Changed my guess from Banjo-Kazooie, LOL.

#40  Where are Demons Souls meet Japanese Mythos?

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice?

.

Nope.

It is a forgotten gem for sure. I would fill my party with human characters because I loved how they combo-ed their attacks together in a Chrono Trigger-like way.

Updated for three days since I worked all weekend and didn't have time to do anything else.

46. Tales of Vesperia (X360, Namco) - a gorgeous RPG that showed off Fujishima's art style, and a beacon of hope in a then dismal landscape for RPGs and Japanese games in general.

45. The Legend of Zelda (NES, Nintendo) - I played this new in 1987, and it was the most amazing game I could imagine at the time. Spent months on it and loved every minute of it, even when I was getting my ass kicked.

44. Joust (arcade) - One of my first two-player simultaneous experiences other than Pong. I used to play this with my sister.

Hint for # 43:

This game follows you from your childhood, to an adolescence spent in prison only to be released and given a choice between your childhood sweetheart and two debutante sisters for marriage, and then the lives of your children.

Hint for # 42:

A student with extreme social anxiety has his classmates and his girlfriend spend most of the game trying to get him to come out of his shell.

Hint for # 41:

The very first game to feature the brother of one of the biggest game characters in history. His personality was defined by a TV commercial for this game.

43. Pretty sure this is Dragon Quest V

42. This could be FFVIII, doesn't sound quite right but I could see it being described something like this.

41. Hmm, I want to go with this being about Luigi, so I think the first game he appeared in was Mario Bros, but it might have been Wrecking Crew.

You got all three of them right. Guess I need to be more vague in hints, LOL. Not that it's a big deal. This is fun.

#43: Star Fox 64

"Do a barrel roll!" This game is a quick one to finish (something like 45 minutes) but it's entertaining all the way through. The multiple routes you can take add replay value to the game as well as the medals which force to plan your attack carefully to maximize the number of points you get from the enemies.

The game is mostly a rail shooter but for some levels and bosses the Star Fox team switches to all-range mode where you can fly freely. The best of those stages feature Star Wolf which you have to gun down using all your pilot tricks. They have awesome voice lines too!

"Annoying bird! I'm the great Leon" - The Great Leon

"Andross' enemy is MY enemy" - Andrew

"Can't let you do that Star Fox" - Wolf
