Forums - Gaming - Top 20 Console Games of 2008 (Based on History)

15/20 games are 360 - good news for microsoft.
I'm planning to get Gears2 and Ninja - possibly couple of others.

still thinking about purchasing MGS4 bundled PS3.

Good coverage and facts. Well done. Agree with everything. @Onyxmeth: I'm guessing KZ2 and Resistance to didnt make it in top 20 because the first games didnt score that highly on gamerrankings.

According to Metacritic, Resistance scored 86%, and Killzone 70%. So Resistance 2 probably was #21.

Well many will score lower IMO ... at least sequels . But I could be wrong ... hell , Im wrong most of the time :P Good list BTW ;)

I'm fine with most predictions, but this one just seems so...futile. Every one will probably be wrong except maybe (and I hate to admit it) GTAIV.

Anywho, here's my list:

19. MGS4
18. MGS4
17. MGS4
16. MGS4
15. MGS4
14. MGS4
13. MGS4
12. MGS4
11. MGS4
10. MGS4
9. MGS4
8. MGS4
7. MGS4
6. MGS4
5. MGS4

Yes. Resistance 2 was just outside at # 21.

Great idea! Enjoyed the list.

I think Banjoo Kazooie 3 won't be that highly rated with how well received Kameo and Perfect Dark were ...

Beyond that, I think with the sequels in the list the scores could actually be lower because the gameplay simply doesn't feel as fresh and new as it once did; at the same time new series can also be pretty hit and miss because the elements they cange may be ones people like/dislike.

One last consideration is that on ocassion games have received unusualy high scores because they're the first game that pushes graphics to the next level. FEAR for the PC was one of these games and beyond the graphics did not really "earn" its score; the follow up game will (probably) not be able to make as large of a breakthrough being that it is a multiplatform release so could receive dramatically lower scores.

This wasn't meant to predict how things would go. I just wanted to see based on a single set of conditions how I could create a top 20 list for 2008. It was to emphasize that it's not always the games you expect that end up being the greatest, as you can see some games that aren't receving much attention, like Brutal Legend and Brothers in Arms could end up being critical darlings. It was to take the hype away and deal with developer consistency. I'm sure many of these titles will score lower, and some titles like Prototype, Little Big Planet and Killzone 2 could turn out excellent, but that's all speculation, and everyone has their own opinion. This just took away the opinions and made a standard to judge all of the games by. I think the top four selections are going to be very close to the real thing personally, and believe games like Tekken 6 and Brutal Legend really will be among the best rated this year.

As far as Banjo 3, I have hope it can deliver. Maybe not quite what it's predecessors did but will still be late 80s on a critical average. Supposedly the Banjo team is relatively intact and Banjo doesn't need to suffer through two rushed development cycles like you know Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo had to. Viva Pinata was Rare back in top form in my opinion. Remember that games are judged more harshly nowadays as back in the days there were only 15-20 publications/websites to get reviews from and now there are 150+.

I think that if Nintendo announces it at E3, then Pikmin could score near the bottom of your list (or I guess top in this particular case). Pikmin 2 received 89.1%, which would place it at 15th on your current list.
