Great debut for SMM2 with 196k and the Switch boosted by 30k from last week and by 8k from last year. This week 26 is the ninth highest week for the Switch. Last edited by nero - on 03 July 2019

Good, not great numbers for MM2 and switch hardware.

Damn! Almost 200k!

Pocky Lover Boy!

Nice start for SMM2, anybody remember how much NSMBUD sold on its first week? I'm interested in comparing how popular the Maker series is compared to the regular 2D Mario games.

PS4 is holding well considering it's not discounted anymore (right?).

I've just checked. About 166k on its first week, while Super Mario Maker for Wii U sold about 150k.

Good start for MM2, although the media create numbers for the game got leaked and it was 230k. I wonder why there was such a big difference there. Also, digital sales might be high on this one, so I can’t wait to find out at the end of the month

Thanks, it seems the Maker series is slightly less popular than the regular 2D Marios but even then 2D Mario has taken a massive drop since the highs of NSMBW which opened at 943k.

NSMBU Deluxe sold 185k units first week, according to Famitsu. It's a port of an old game though.

According to a mix of Media Create and Famitsu as sources:

NSMB (DS) - 899k
NSMB Wii - 936k
NSMB2 - 430k
NSMBU - 160k

The staleness of NSMB2 certainly took a toll on sales. NSMBU was a Wii U launch title, so naturally capped by sales of the console (Wii U debuted to sales of a good 300k units, so that would have been the maximum NSMBU could have achieved with a 100% attach rate). Although staleness was a factor too.

Yeah something needs to be done to shake up the formula because another title in the same vein won't probably do so well.

Not hard to come up with ideas to push sales to old heights or at least significantly above the 3DS and Wii U entries.

New artstyle, new music, new bosses, world themes being more than the same eight that were used across all four NSMB games (grass, desert, ice, water, jungle, mountain, sky, lava). Can take a look at 3D Mario, Wario Land and Yoshi games in order to more than double the amount of themes with absolute ease. The NSMB games more or less rearranged the order of world themes and bosses, so 2D Mario didn't move forward with the 3DS and Wii U installments.

Take the evolution from Donkey Kong Country Returns to Tropical Freeze and you've got yourself a great new 2D Mario game. Just a pity for Tropical Freeze to be put on the Wii U, a console that held back all of its games. The Switch version of it isn't going to reach 5m copies lifetime, but at least some vindication.

I would love a 2D Mario with an amount of work similar to what went into Tropical Freeze! It would be glorious!

Digital sales clearly hampered MM2's opening at retail. Switch sales are fine, nothing special.

Japan so wants a Switch mini.
