I'm currently pretty happy with things. I miss the sales estimates, though I know they're not coming back. It would have been nice to just relabel them "physical retail estimates" just to have a rough digital-physical breakdown. I also miss the amount of regional data we had. Maybe that'll improve as we get more data, but even older games that we have official shipments for the totals of have lost their longstanding regional estimates. I miss that data, even if it was probably rough it at least gave me a general sense of which series did well in which regions in which eras of that series (for example, Japan liked early Zelda, USA likes modern Zelda more, everyone loves BotW). God I miss that data. Now all I see is a bunch of "N/A" everywhere. If it was about digital games, then couldn't you have kept the regional data for games before the digital era?

I had a weird thought. If there are a bunch of lurkers, perhaps if you gave them an anonymous way to give feedback, they'd tell you what it would take to get them to come out of lurking and join us? You'd probably get a vocal group of assholes that would use it as an opportunity to troll the mods, but you might get some sincere people that are just shy for some reason? Or it might just be a bunch of banned ex users trash talking you that you'd be able to recognize by the IP. I dunno, just a thought, might be interesting to see what the lurkers are thinking.

Around the Network

This and IGN are my favorite game sites, but in the past 2 weeks VGC has become damn near unusable for my iPhone X. Scrolling up and down a page is extremely slow and takes forever; sometimes, scrolling is not even possible due to a glitch (e.g. the Sekiro 2mil sold thread. I can’t scroll past the OP to see the rest of the comments); and the ads are ridiculous, taking up 1/4 of the screen with no ability to click out of them.

This isn’t mentioning the fact that the site is seriously unsafe. It literally says “Not Secure” at all times next to the URL at the top of the page. This site has given every one of my phones viruses that will take me to a new fake website automatically. And all the history for that page is eliminated/glitched, so I cant just press “back”; I have to just close out the window entirely.

VGC has been glitchy and unsafe for all the years I’ve used it, but now it’s reached a new level.

@TalonMan

Could we get a way to choose what badges show up below our avatars? For some reason I still have the 2 years, and the Mirror Image badges. But shouldn't newer badges like "5 years", show up instead?

You know - this looks to be a feature that was started, but never finished. I don't remember whether I was the one to start it, or somebody else - but my "Badges" page has a drop-down to allow selecting badges you want to display in the forum. The work isn't finished, but it was definitely started.

I did change (a long while back) the fact that the badges that displayed were always the last 6 badges received - it now randomly selects 6 badges, each time the page is loaded. Not the greatest solution, of course - but at least somewhat better than having the same static 6 badges showing, over and over again.

I'll revisit this at some point, and see what work is left to do...

Cool. Even having it show the 6 most recent badges would be a huge improvement.

I know it's not a UI thing, but is there a plan to add HTTPS? I feel like my cookies and password are vulnerable here.

Came back to this thread to say this.

Please improve the Ui for mobilr phone users. At the moment is horrible. Also there should be a rule where CGI has to post more pics of his gsmes being played on his pc 😂

I've discussed this before, but I'll certainly answer again: It's definitely NOT a technical issue for us, it's a resource issue.

There are hundreds and hundreds of scripts, running this website (hell, I'm sure there are easily over a thousand - because there is 12yrs of code sitting on our server, and nobody has ever taken the time to figure out which scripts are even NEEDED at this point and which ones are obsolete!), that somebody will need to go through to clean any "http" URL references that have been hard-coded. It's not an impossible task, just a sh*t ton of tedious grunt work - and I don't have the desire or patience to even attempt it, right now.

More to the point, what is the actual value (vs. perceived value) in doing all of this work (beyond the Google threat of lowering our search rank)? HTTPS has nothing to do with cookies or passwords, beyond the ones used on the specific website in question - and we are not an eCommerce site (beyond our Supporter program, which is handled entirely by PayPal), so there is nothing of "real" consequential value that is stored in our database or passed around on these pages. Let's imagine the absolute WORST of ALL WORST CASE scenarios - somebody found a way to steal (and also managed to somehow decrypt, because passwords here are definitely NOT stored plaintext) your VGChartz userpwd...    ...oh no!! They have access to your VGChartz profile and can post as you! But what else? We don't store SSNs or credit cards or any financial information - in fact, beyond an email address (for bot prevention), we require the barest of bare minimum information in order to create an account.

VGChartz is FAR MORE vulnerable to SQL injection and XSS attacks (something HTTPS has zero impact on), than any certificate could protect from - and if there was going to be any investment of time and effort into security, it would be in THOSE areas that we ought to be focused. Not a cosmetic "feel good" change, that has far less consequential impact...

Thanks for answering! I'll admit, this came from a position of ignorance on my part on this matter. I thought HTTPS did more than that. Thanks for putting it into perspective. Sorry to trouble you to answer something you've answered before.
