Forums - Sales - Lazard: GTA IV expects 60/40 Xbox 360/PS3 for US launch sales

@eagles eye - I do not believe the Japan one will release this year. and I'm saying 60/40 and 55/45 in the first month or so.

So basically I was saying that it will be close but Ps3 version will have better legs (Ps3 selling better on a weekly basis which gives it a better chance) and then take the lead with Japanese release.

Let me go on record and say I do not think in all certainty the Ps3 will be greater than the 360 and vice versa.

My point is there are way to many variables that will effect this game to determine the outcome.

Like HW boosts.
User base
Legs
Yadda yadda

MikeB sometimes your bias gets in the way of some of the great points you have to make. Everyone knows that the larger your install base the lower your attachment rate is going to be so attachment rate really does not matter, infact individual consoles sales does not really matter for Rockstar.

Aslong as GTA4 sells well overal and both systems sell atleast 3m then it fully justifies why multiplatform development is the way to go. It doesnt really matter what the % split is aslong as the title is a success in its own right on both platforms.

Personally I can see the 360 version outselling the PS3 version globally by around 60-40 during its first month. Roughly 3-4m on the 360 vs 2-2.5m on the PS3.

The American market is the biggest for buying games and the 360 has a massive lead there, even in Others the 360 gets more sales for most hardcore games.

The PS3 might eventually catch the 360 in GTA4 sales but its going to take quite a while.

I agre BUT GTA4 will have more legs on Xbox360

... less fans BUT more total users !!!

I would think the PS3 version would have the better legs for the long run. There's a huge list of top ranking PS2 games which are set to receive PS3 exclusive sequels, I would imagine many PS2 users upgrading towards a PS3 also played GTA III and/or San Andreas on the PS2 and thus may be interested in picking up this title.

And whats stopping people upgrading to 360 at a lower price?

Pricing is important, but I believe the bulk of PS2 owners want a Playstation 3, most are just waiting for the price to drop or the big PS2 sequels to arrive. Sony has a good reputation with regard to long lasting support for their consoles and the PS3 has a good reputation with regard to reliability, there are many other factors as well.

I think 360 sales will drop off eventually, after this year there are no more sequels left to popular XBox franchices while the big guns for the PS3 are yet to arrive in this regard.

PS3 vs 360 sales

@pooper

At least youre sensible then.

Let me just end with this, 360 has the DLC, 360 price cut in NA, and we all know multiplayer will be eaten up by Xbox Live owners. GTA4 will sell well in EU+Others, but lets not kid anyone, the main market is NA, where the legs are most important.

Dont attach rates naturally decline as the installed base gets larger (and more games become available for the system)?  Its not a simple percentage comparison.

PS360 ftw!

Currently playing..........

Gears of War 2, GTA IV Lost and Damned, Little Big Planet (Yes I said I had no interest but my girl wanted to try it and we did and now Im hooked )

I first played the series on Playstation. I'm buying the Xbox 360 version. If I were you, I wouldn't OVERestimate the value of brand power.

Also, I subscribe to the belief that it will be more closer to 70-30 or 65-35 (though I have no basis to back it up, it's just a feeling).

I never played GTA on a Playstation, but I am getting the PS3 version. (Previous games I played on the PC, but now I prefer playing the game with wireless playstation controller sitting on the couch watching a big screen HDTV on a nearly hassle free console. Though a similar PC to console migration might happen for the 360 as well.)

I don't think it's only the brandname itself, but rather the games connected to the brand.

PS3 vs 360 sales

@xenophon13 & PooperScooper

I didn't know all those games were coming out for PS3 and the 360 wasn't getting anything worthwhile! That means that guy at GameStop lied about all those games coming to the 360 this year. I think I'm gonna get my money back for Ninja Gaiden II. I'm gonna feel so embarrassed telling my friends we were lied to. Now we all need to get PS3's for these amazing games that are gonna be released. Good thing I didn't put any money down for Splinter Cell: Conviction, Banjo Threeie, Fable 2, Gears of War 2 or Too Human. I'm so depressed!

/sarcasm

Seriously just because you guys know you're finally going to get great games to play doesn't mean the other consoles aren't getting any. The 360 has a better library right now which will only get better yet you think the PS3 will trump all that in one year with 4 or 5 games!? I have great games I haven't even had a chance to play yet like: The Orange Box, Mass Effect, and Lost Odessy!

Why do Sony fans think everyone is so patient they will wait for great games to come out on the PS3 before buying a next gen console. A gamer wants to play the latest and greatest games in the genre they like. Therefore they would have upgraded already because some pretty great games have come out for the 360 and Wii so far.

Hey look, people discussing speculation as if it were facts =/

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

@MikeB
On the contrary, the Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, BioShock, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Too Human, Alan Wake, Crackdown (or APB), Forza Motorsport franchises will continue (Im sure Im missing many more). And, I can use other multiplatform 3rd party to argue because franchises like COD, Tom Clancy range, Assassins Creed, Guitar Hero because they outsold PS3 in ratios like 3:1, 4:1.

Sony did have a good reputation for the PS2 monopoly, but I think they need to buck up a bit now to retain that reputation for NA.
