Forums - PC Discussion - 40 percent of Epic Games Store users say they don't have Steam

This data makes me wonder how many PC gamers don't really use Steam for their gaming habits, and what they use instead. Steam is usually seen as a massive monopoly, put considering how many other digital storefronts and sale methodes are for the platform...

You know it deserves the GOTY.

There’s plenty of people who game on PC that have never used Steam

I used to be one.

Pretty much people who play MMOs like WoW/FFXIV, , League of Legends, Overwatch, Apex, Fortnite, etc. There’s a lot of places to play on PC.

The 40% are likely people who play Fortnite and a small “majority” that have some agenda against Steam/GOG because they have a lot of free time to moan and groan ;)

My claim was about North America.  No one can counter my argument about North America, because no one has solid numbers about North America.  The very fact that these numbers are a secret is evidence that my claim is correct.

There is more than enough evidence to suggest your claim is invalid and outdated - and it’s pretty much out there - do some research yourself instead of imposing a false claim especially when you are the only one who is expressing it.

I did the research.  That is why I don't think they have much of a presence in North America.

Now if you are talking about the world outside of North America, Japan, and Western Europe, then I think Steam has a pretty decent presence.  All of the numbers that the other posters are talking about are worldwide numbers.  I actually do believe Steam is growing worldwide, but it is growing in places where consoles do not have much of a presence.

Very basic data...

https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/steampowered.com

1/4 of all Steam store traffic is from the US. That is more than total traffic from Russia, China, and Japan combined.

You didn't actually do any research did you?

Just compare it with Playstation's data.

Since you have the data, could you please tell me the sales of the top 20 games on Steam in North America in 2018?  I am looking for relevant sales data, so we can compare it to console sales or PC sales in the past.

Steam doesn't release official software sales data unfortunately. We know what the top 20 games are by revenue worldwide, but not by region, and we definitely don't know the top 20 games by unit sales or how many units they sold. Here is the 2018 top 20 by revenue worldwide:

1. Monster Hunter World
2. Dota 2
3. Rocket League
4. Rainbow Six Siege
5. AC Odyssey
6. Warframe
7. CS:GO
8. PUBG
9. Civilization 6
10. The Elder Scrolls Online
11. Far Cry 5
12. GTA V
13. Ark: Survival Evolved
14. Black Desert Online
15. Kingdom Come Deliverance
16. Stallaris
17. Jurassic World Evolution
18. Dead By Daylight
19. Cities Skylines
20. AC Origins

Thank you.  This is, at least, on the right track.

However, unless I missed something, we don't have actual revenue numbers.  Also I believe this list is for all of Steam and not just North America, correct?  One of my points in this thread is that we don't have sales data that we can compare to either current console sales or past PC sales.  That makes it difficult to gauge just how well (or poorly) Steam is doing in regions where consoles are popular.

Yes, that is correct, we don't know revenue amounts, we don't have a region by region breakdown, and we don't know unit sales. The closest info we have to official unit sales are from Steam Spy and a Steam data leak last July which gives you a picture of partial sales data for the year for some games that released in 2018, as well as lifetime sales for games that released before 2018.

Didn't know about that data leak.  That is extremely useful.  Thank you.

Of course the data is in a very raw form, but that is a nice place to start.

Could you please tell me the sales of the top 20 games on Switch, PS4, and X1 in North America in 2018?

You're asking for data for PC that doesn't exist publicly anywhere for any other gaming platform. It's really, really bizarre.
