Have you looked at old Mega Man sales? The best selling entry of all time is only 1.51 million.

And that number comes directly from Capcom.

I honestly hadn't. I didn't realize it never sold that well. Kinda like Metroid then. Interesting. Thanks for the info Zorg!

No problem and ya it's crazy that such a beloved and well known IP like Mega Man has never been a real big seller.

On their site it says there has been 148 releases (I'm assuming this includes rereleases?) and the franchise has sold 33 million.

I just can't freaking wait for Megaman X9. I have been waiting for that game for most of my life. I'm 21 and it's so damn exciting to think that we might be really close to it. I wanna see X, Zero and Axl again in action. I hope more success comes to my favourite gaming franchise. I want to play as zero in the same artstyle as the X series but a new adventure. The new design of zero really didn't sit well with me in Megaman Zero. But I would love a legacy collection of Megaman zero as well. I'm just over the moon thinking about X9. As most people have been waiting for games like kingdom hearts 3 or mother 3 in the west, I've been waiting for this just to give you an idea of how much the X franchise means to me

Just a guy who doesn't want to be bored. Also

But how would the story to Megaman X9 go? X8 ended with Sigma getting killed on the moon and unable to come back this time, unless he got put on a copy chip.

Bro.... the whole entire thing about the New Gen Reploids was that SIgma's DNA was in every chip. We already know how Sigma is coming back.

That is why I think X needs a reboot.

The whole series story is a mess at this point.Characters appearing and dissapearing for no reason at all, with Dr. Cain being the best example of that; Some plot point never being explained as to who saved X at the end of X5(even if the game heavily implies it was Dr. Light); and the biggest of them all:How the hell is Sigma still being alive/being able to be ressurected?I mean, he was supposidely killed in X 3, when Zero injects into him the anti Sigma virus. After that game, Sigma just comes back with no explanation at all, and the gang(X, Zero, and all the Maverick Hunters) are like "Ok, Sigma is just like that".

But one step at a time.If X9 is easier to do than to try to do a reboot, then just do it.If you manage to explain everything in X9 Capcom, even better.

1. Bro! If you play MMX6 Dr. Light straight up tells Zero that he saved X but had no idea how Zero came back. I believe its taking Zero to the Light capsule in Infinity Mijinion's stage where that conversation happens

2.  No explanation is needed. It didn't work. We learn later in Zero series that Zero himself has the antibodies to virus and they had to pretty much break him down to figure out how the virus works then from that the Mother Elf was made. In a sense we can compare it to medicine vs a Vaccine. Medicine just suppress's/slows down the the illness (Dopplers cure) while a Vaccine eradicates (Mother Elf)

3. In the original series, Cain dies off screen from old age. The Reimagining Sigma kills him but he, was dying anyway.

Definitely no "need" for a Reboot.

Man, its been a while since I played X6, since I didnt remember that Zero talked with Dr. Light holograms. In a way it kind of points out the bad narrative the series has(with the later games) that these pods were supposed to be Dr. Light recording messages from the past for X, yet here he is leaving messages for Zero and knowing about the whole Nightmare situation. That also reminds me about the whole problem of people just comming back to life when the game needs them to.I mean, I know they are robots but there should be a limit, so that someones death has some impact.

Well yeah, I figured it didnt work, since Sigma kept comming back.Yet they never tried to develop one that could actually kill the guy who almost destroys the whole world over and over again? And why didnt the maverick hunters never mentioned anything about Sigma being a virus and trying to develop some kind of countermeasure against him after X5?Or that how Vile was able to come back to life in X8?Someone kept his body safe somewhere? If so, how come he survived his encounter with X on X3?This game is becomming like Dark Souls, where you come up with explanations as time goes on to explain whats going on.Thats not good storytelling, thats just a mess.

And where is ever mentioned that Cain died off of old age?Even if its mentioned in a magazine or on some super obscure corner of any X game, thats bad storytelling.I mean, Im a huge X fan and didnt know about that(I suspected, but thats about it).For such an important caracther to just die off screen like that, and the story not even bothering to tell you that, shows that you have problems with it.

Mega Man is not about telling a story. The minor details that you want from the story are inconsequential; what would knowing Dr Cain's death on screen bring to game? Nothing! absolutely nothing. Let's be real, Dr Cain is NOT an important character in the series. X is a cartoony drama about role of self aware androids and their place in the world. Should they be created to just to serve humans? They were  created by humans.... but they are sentient. Game handles these topics with grace of a Saturday morning cartoon and that's by choice.

X6 establishes that all Reploids carry DNA, which essentially is their programming. As long as that is not damaged beyond repair they can come back infinitely. Were talking about anime Robots bro. Everybody assumed Sigma to be dead after X3. Both X and Zero are very surprised to see Sigma back in X4 implying that it's been awhile. Same thing in X7. So, its not something that happens frequently. After X5, every appearance of Sigma gets worse and worse, signifying that he is having a harder time coming back each time.

Btw, Light capsules are NOT pre recorded. We know that as early as the SNES games. Its Dr Light as an A.I. Lot of this stuff can be inferred, but you seem to what someone to smack you over the head with a hammer. A lot of minor details that would not enhance the general plot at all.

I dont agree with you at all.All those points I mentioned are not minor details, every explanation you have for any issues I bring up are never explained on the game(as far as I know) and you are just making assumptions, which is the same problem I have with Dark Souls.

But what i dont agree with you is that the story dosent matter for the X franchise. The original Megaman series is the one where story really dosent matter. Its not that much different than Mario:Whatever excuse they make up for Megaman to go on his adventure is just that, an excuse. They are not bothering to tell a significant story because they want the gameplay and the level design to be the heart of the game.

But when Capcom set out to make the X series, they had a bigger ambition:not only to evolve the gameplay that started with Megaman, but also to add a significant story, to move you and make you invested on that level too.If story wasnt all that important, why did they create a very good reason for Sigma to keep comming back?(at least until X3)I mean, he is a robot, they could simply say that he had a minion that picked up his parts and built him back up, if story really didnt matter. Why did they make X question his existance, about who he really is and thus give his caracther depth?Same for Zero? They both could be the classic hero as Megaman is.

See, X isnt simply just about gameplay.Im not asking, nor even want, a complex story like Metal Gear. But I do want a consistent and coherent story, for as simple as it is, and Im not alone.

On a side note, I would love that Megaman X receive the "Metroid Prime" treatment.Capcom was on the right track with that game way back when they made a demo of an X game in first perspective. They just had made alot of wrong design choices.Giving X a gun?Taking out his human face to put a weird robot face?Making the game art style to be realistic?Ugh.But other than that, it was a good idea.I hope that they go back to that someday.
