This is not something I was expecting to see.
Who was developing this game initially?

Rumours pegged it as being in development at Bandai Namco Studios Singapore, with development scheduled to be handed over to Bandai Namco Studios Tokyo (who co-developed Smash 3DS/Wii U and Smash Ultimate), but it was never actually confirmed. Nintendo simply said it was made by 'a talented new development team'.

This are actually pretty good news to me.

When I knew that Metroid Prime 4 was in development and that Retro Studios was not the studio behind it, I had many concearns about the project. I wondered if Nintendo was actually aware of the importance of the Metroid Prime series for Nintendo fans. Metroid Prime is significant for us for many reasons. First, is the most "adult" and different game that Nintendo tends to offer. Second, the whole trilogy is regarded as some of the best games PERIOD. And third, Metroid Prime is expected to squeeze the console it's in, offering some of the best graphics on the system.

As such, I was not sure if Nintendo, along with whathever studios was developing MP4, were making "just another game". I hope you understand what I mean.

By making a difficult decision like this... restarting the developing and giving the project to both the original producer and studio that made the original trilogy... Nintendo has convinced me that they know how importan Metroid Prime 4 is and that they understand how great the game has to be for us.

So... I'm sad that we have to wait maybe years to even see some gameplay. But in the end I think it is for the best and I believe we'll end up benefiting from this decision.

The original staff the developed Metroid Prime is not anymore at Retro. On top of that, their experience with HD is an unimpressive DK game so far, or at least released since 2010. This does not guarantee that they are going to squeeze the Switch’s power.

A brand new internal team is all we know it's rumoured to be made of people who worked on that cancelled Star Wars 1313 title working alongside people from Namco, the new team is still working on MP4 only it'll be with Retro as well.

The original staff left shortly after the first game yet Echoes and Corruption were fine as they were replaced, the original Prime itself ran into a similar issue in development but eventually turned out fine.

I think ultimately this is for the best. Because they really need to nail it and I think Retro has what it takes to take the series to the right direction. This is a drastic quality control measure and it could very well be a blessing for us.

Huh, this came out of nowhere. Well, bad news better be told now than in a Direct, I guess.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

AFAIK, part of the staff that developed Echoes and Corruption also left.

Original rumours had it as Bandai-Namco, also working on Ridge Racer 8 iirc. I wonder how development on that is going too.

Oh snap! In my opinion, Nintendo really shouldn’t have announced the game so early, Switch was already selling great. 2017 me would slap me for asking this, but I wonder if Retro is still up to the task? It’s been like a decade since the last one. Still more faith than putting it in some brand new hands.

It is slightly odd. This announcement felt very much like Nintendo in 2013 Wii-U mode where they announced a load of stuff that was years away like Xenoblade and Zelda. Not sure why they felt the need to do that! But to be fair, Sony has done it plenty too despite leading the pack for years.

At least Nintendo is giving their fans an update unlike other big publishers (looking at you Square Enix).

Btw, what could cause a development reboot? I find that decision pretty drastic.

If it was just graphics, they could focus on it, but this sounds more than that. Bad fundamentals of the game? Engine not working? Full of bugs?
