What generation is the Nintendo Switch?

Given generations are an artificial construct, the Switch is currently Gen 8. Until the next Sony and Microsoft consoles come out, at which point everyone will re-classify it as gen 9. This little issue is why we see "current generation" used far more often lately. It allows writers to easily explain stories in the context of PS4, XB1 and Switch without dealing with pedantic "Switch isn't generation 8" arguments.

Switch is defiantly new Nintendo generation console, it's more complicated to say where generally fits on market,
but IMO it cant be same generation like Wii U in any case.

I think at this point Nintendo consoles are mid gen consoles 8.5 not a true 9th generation console but also not a true 8th generation console

I can play within 8 meters of my PS4 Pro as well, just a bit further away from the screen.  Does that make the PS4 or X1 a portable as well?  I mean, by that logic all wireless devices would be "portable".

I said that it was 3rd gen after you made your point, but pointed out that it was the 1st gen that made an impact in the mainstream.  I never said it was both (though my wording could have been better, I admit).  The only time I claimed 1st gen was before you brought up the Sega system and the Nvidia Shield, which I acknowledged by stating that Switch was more accurately a 3rd gen hybrid.

Your logic is flawed, your argument is absurd.
If you cannot see that the WiiU is a hybrid platform with it's portable screen, then I am not sure what to tell you.

Most people that care about generations are probably too old to remember Sega consoles before the Genesis / Mega Drive so they may not recognize that a company releasing multiple consoles in a generation isn't exactly a new thing. The only time a new console release actually starts a new generation is when it pushes new technology that becomes the standard in terms of power or features for future devices.

 

Such as the Sega Genesis or the Dreamcast did for their generations. Meanwhile the 3D0 and Atari Jaguar are in the 16 bit era despite power

I say it’s gen 8 for many reasons already stated by others, and also because I don’t feel the need to consider it a gen higher than all the consoles it competes with, as if to pass it as something more than it is. Using double standards and rewriting history to make it somehow fit my view is also not my style.

Just like it happened during older generations, a console maker released two consoles during the same gen. Big deal.

You do not have to tell me anything.  If you want to believe that a console that you cannot take with you on the go is a portable because of off screen play, go ahead and believe that.  Does not make it true though.

I already clarified to you that I said it was a 3rd gen hybrid console but was the 1st gen to make an impact to the mainstream.  I admitted that my wording was off after this clarification.  Not sure why you keep talking in circles over nothing like you have something to disprove.  I practically agreed with you.  I am starting to question why you are even replying at this point.
