Most people that care about generations are probably too old to remember Sega consoles before the Genesis / Mega Drive so they may not recognize that a company releasing multiple consoles in a generation isn't exactly a new thing. The only time a new console release actually starts a new generation is when it pushes new technology that becomes the standard in terms of power or features for future devices.

 

Such as the Sega Genesis or the Dreamcast did for their generations. Meanwhile the 3D0 and Atari Jaguar are in the 16 bit era despite power
