I'm making an effort, but I could do more. We've moved to compact flourescents, I've shortened my showers to around 4 minutes, I'm cutting down on my driving (of course it's a god damned suv...), a green bin composting program for garbage pick up just started in our region and just last week we figured out a way fit everything in the one freezer allowing us to unplug our large stand alone unit in the basement. I also put in dual flush toilets a while ago that use 4 or 6 litres depending on what you do.

I'm also trying to eat less meat.

How do you do that? I can get down to 20 minutes in a rush, but not less. Usually 30 minutes (I use little water since I have low flow shower heads, and use very little pressure and often turn off the water while lathering up, so its not so much to save water, but to save time that I ask. Although my shower is one of my favorite parts of the day)

 hmm, I hop in the shower, and turn on the water, adjust it to a comfortable temperature. (< 1min) get under the water and run my hands through my hair to make sure its nice and wet (< 1 min). Grab shampoo and wash hair (1-2 min). grab soap and wash body (1-2 min). Rinse off completely (1-2 min). Get out. Total time ~5-8 minutes. Unless your super dirty or have long hair, it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to get a shower.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

@luinil

But China has about 4 times more people than USA. If you count carbon emitted per person, the USA wins by a country mile.

The sad thing about environmental issues, is a lot of people just hear "Global Warming" whereas we're doing a lot more to the environment then Global Warming. Even if Greenhouse gases and carbon emissions etc. weren't an issue, there'd still be the diminishing water resources, landfills, de-forestation and so forth whose side-effects on the planet can't be denied.

The only teeth strong enough to eat other teeth.

there is nothing we can due to stop global warming...it has happened before and will happen again------but that dose not mean we don't need to be good stewards for the planet

Meso makes my point in fewer words. Brevity is the soul of wit. +10 for Meso.

The sad thing is that people don't want to do something...They always think...Well I be dead when earth is not more a place where you can live;.

That's why I like to use the term "climate change" since it avoids the "Where's global warming when you need it?" comments on cold days. In my view, most of the problems of the world (those your mentioned) would be solved (at least partially) with a non-negligible decrease of the world population.

@mesoteto

Even with that point of view, do you still take steps that are environmentally friendly, yet at the same time save you money such as buying compact fluorescent light bulbs?

@ Konnichiwa

I agree.

@Nordlead

Thanks for the tips.

Not to start a controversy, but I wonder how environmentally conscious the world would be if religious doctrine or sacred literature had mentioned environmental issues.

@Dog's Rule: Just curious, but who gets to decide who is negligible in the world population? Are you suggesting removing people from the living to allow the environment to thrive more?

That's why charging people more money for gas is a good thing. Right now, people are already driving less and SUV use is going down.

We just need to start doing more by encouraging people by using cloth grocery bags by charging for the disposable ones (IKEA already does this), and having a higher CRV so it encourages people to recycle their cans more.

Americans won't do anything unless you hit their pocketbooks.
