Breath of the Wild is a game that for me is all about freedom. You can roam the landscape and explore the land. The kingdom of Hylia is in ruins, and while you find people starting to go back into the lands, it is mostly in the hand of wild nature and monsters. So it is dangerous, but beatiful at the same time. I run around and was just blown away by some of the views of nature around me. the artstyle fits this beaty perfectly. And a game you can play practically endlessly.

The next 10 positions:

#25 - Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

What I like the most about this game: The heartwarming charm that it has, the memorable and sometimes sad story moments (there's an event near the start of the game that made me cry), the game's world and its lore, which is incredibly deep; the world map, the monster collecting (some people don't like it but I enjoyed it), the gorgeous art-style, the masterful soundtrack.

#24 - Super Mario Galaxy

What I like the most about this game: The creativity of the level design and the great variety of levels that it has, the sense of being in a grand adventure that it gives you, Rosalina's stories (they made me shed tears the first time I read them), Mario's transformations, the art direction, the incredible soundtrack. This game completely blowed me away the first time I played it.

#23 - Super Mario 64

What I like the most about this game: The freedom to explore that it gives you, combined with the fun platforming; Mario's wide moveset and agility, which allows you to tackle obstacles in different ways and makes it a pleasure to play the game; the good variety of levels, the good mission design, the soundtrack (Jolly Roger Bay music is one of my favorite tracks in any game). This game was really mindblowing the first time I played it.

#22 - Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

What I like the most about this game: The way it overthrows Mario conventions to tell a creative and interesting story, the great variety of locales that you visit and how they are different from what you'd see in a conventional Mario game, the party members, the battle system, the new paper-based mechanics (stuff like the paper plane), the humor, the beautiful art-style.

#21 - Super Mario Galaxy 2

What I like the most about this game:  The incredibly brilliant level design, which I found it to be even better than Galaxy 1's; the fastastic variety of galaxies that it has (it has both quality and quantity); the boss fights (the battle against Gobblegut is one of my favorites in Mario games); the new Mario transformations, particularly Cloud Mario, which allows for some creative platforming; the soundtrack and visuals. Also, I love Yoshi.

#20 - Final Fantasy IX

What I like the most about this game: The charming and colorful cast of characters, the memorable moments that the story has; the romance between Garnet and Zidane; the  ending, which is one of my favorites from any game; the Active Time Events, which help to flesh out the characters; the game's world, the way you learn abilities by equipping different items that teach them, the music.

#19 - Final Fantasy XII

What I like the most about this game: The world of Ivalice, which is amazingly fleshed-out, both in terms of lore and how alive it feels; the world exploration, the battle system and the gambit system (which allows to make incredibly deep strategies and to customize of the behavior of the A.I. partners), the political tone of the story, the dialogue direction, the voice acting, the hunts and all the side content; the soundtrack, which is super underrated. Also, Balthier is one of my favorite J-RPG characters ever.

#18 - The World Ends with You

What I like the most about this game: The story, which is really compelling, and its memorable moments; Neku's character development, the unique battle system and the pins system, the characters and their interactions (it's particularly interesting to see how the relationship between Neku and the other characters evolves with time), the Shibuya setting and its atmosphere, the art direction, the soundtrack.

#17 - Kid Icarus: Uprising

What I like the most about this game: The overall gameplay flow of the game (I like both the aerial and the on-foot combat); the characters (including the villains) and the conversations between them, some of which are very funny; the boss battles, the relatively simple but engaging story, the big variety of weapons and how each weapon type feels different to play with than the others, the weapon fusion system, the graphics (amazing for a 3DS game).

#16 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

What I like the most about this game: The fantastic overworld design and the great amount of secrets you can find in the overworld, the freedom that the game gives you to do whatever you want (including the dungeons) in the order you want (also, I don't mind the item rental system), the inventive puzzles (many of which involve the wall-merging mechanic), the fast pace of the progression through the game.

Super Mario 64

  • Nintendo 64, DS
  • 1997
  • 3D Platformer
  • Nintendo EAD / Nintendo

The first game on the podium is 'Super Mario 64'. A game which needs no introduction as it is one of the most well known and important games ever made. Even today, this game is just as amazing as it ever was, but back in the day, it was lightyears ahead of anything we had seen up until then. Just the title screen alone, where you could mold Mario's face by tugging and pulling. Mindblowing, and good for an hour of fun right of the bat.

Of course, it didn't stop there. Each level was a revelation of gaming, there was freedom in this game that was unprecedented. The game includes 15 courses, basically 15 sandbox levels, each with six Stars to find, along with a bonus-Star for collecting at least 100 coins. Aside from these, there's the 'Castle Stars' which are found in secret levels or by completing some small task in the hub-world. It's essentially an open world game, where the player has every freedom to choose what course or what Star to tackle next. The only obstacle that blocks your progress are the Star Doors, which require a certain amount of Stars to open. Behind most of these, there's the Bowser level, which gets you a key to open the door to the next floor in the castle.

The game got a remake on the DS handheld, which added extra levels, new Stars to collect, mini-games and extra playable characters. The remake renovated the art direction of the game to fit with more modern Mario games, and added touch-screen control in place of the monumental analogue stick controls. The remake's controls scheme couldn't match the original's though and even in other, new games, I often find myself thinking developers should have taken a better look at 'Super Mario 64', when it every so often still does things better.

There's nothing to fault in this game, and for all intents and purposes, it's a perfect game. Polished and innovative in ways never thought possible. One would have thought Nintendo couldn't possibly outdo the achievement of 'Super Mario 64', but only a little later, we already knew better. The Nintendo 64 is truly the greatest video-game system ever released.
