Well, I'm gonna be away for the next day or so. Yeah, it's because of Smash again so I'll post the next hint now.

#4 - It's the game I've been most hyped for pre-release.

Edit: actually, I'm staying home. Well, the hint's there anyway.

Breath of the Wild. Should be way higher, though. I'm disappointed in you.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

  • GameBoy, GameBoy Color, Nintendo 3DS
  • 1993
  • Adventure
  • Nintendo EAD / Nintendo

High up in the list we find the highest placed handheld game 'The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening'. It's a brilliant game, more than worthy of the title "best handheld game ever made", yet sadly often overlooked. The original release on the GameBoy is already sufficient for a place this high in the list, but the 'DX' version on the GameBoy Color released a couple years later, seals it.

It is a very original game for the 'Legend of Zelda' series, where Link, the same Link from 'A Link to the Past' and the 'Oracle' games, is shipwrecked during a storm at sea and finds himself on an unknown island populated by people and talking animals, as well as strange foes. As the story goes on, and not only for a Nintendo game is this one very story-heavy, hints and events allude to a greater mystery that surrounds the island. And it all culminates in a bittersweet ending, with a tiny ray of light.

This game still amazes me. It is a GameBoy game, but it is one seemingly impossible to have existed on the system. It runs circles around it's "big" console brother released a year earlier in every way and I am not at all bummed by the fact that I have bought this game four times on three different devices. What's also mostly unknown however is that this game actually pioneered much of the series' mainstays. Mini-bosses, bosses with multiple radically different stages, a guide-character, musical instruments with different songs, fishing and the collect-a-thon and trading sidequests all started with this game. A truly amazing one at that.

#4: I don't find a certain sound in this game annoying at all!

EDIT: Ughh. My posts are split between pages. I hate that.

Ocarina of Time at #4 in S.Peelman's list? Nah, not happening.

To be honest I'm not sure what it is either

I PMed my list a couple days ago by the way, not that it mattered much anymore at this point but I kept forgetting lol.

About the hint, it’s not difficult, it’s a well known game, just think about which game is notorious for a certain annoying sound effect but is still considered great by pretty much everyone, and both of you will guess it for sure. Won’t put a real second hint this soon yet though...

Yeah, last year I gave an extensive hint for HOMM3, and it was guessed fast. This year I was a bit more obscure, but I thought someone might remember. But I am actually surprised you got Octopath Traveler with so little to go by. Shadow of the Collossus is wrong though, although I always think my #3 is kinda comparable to SotC in mood and motivation.

#6 Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE
guessed by The_Liquid_Laser
platform WiiU
release year 2015
developer/publisher Atlus/Nintendo
genre turn-based RPG
links Wikipedia

This game was announced at this remarkable Nintendo Direct, which for a moment seemed to paint a picture, that the course of the WiiU could be corrected. Naturally it turned out to be a Mirage (see what I did there), as most games were far away. So was this game, announced as SMTxFE, a collaboration, between the SMT-series from Atlus and the FE-series from Nintendo.

As the game finally realized as Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, it showed all the great magic, Atlus puts in their games. The world is colorful, the battle system is great, the level design is incredible. I like the way the battle system allows you to chain actions if you hit the right weaknesses. That is phantastic. A game that saw too few sales on the ill-fated WiiU.
