Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch Online Overall Reception -_-

We think Nintendo Switch Online had a good launch, but the service has only just begun, so we have no plans to disclose any current subscriber ratios or number of subscribers at this time.
Enhancing the service:

Our focus at this point is on boosting the appeal of the service. We need to further enhance the content of the service for the subscriber base to reach a certain size, so that is what we’re working on, with the understanding that the time it will take to do so will be measured in years.
Beyond digital:

As for the kind of service this will develop into in the future, Nintendo Switch Online is essentially a digital service, but we are also offering controllers specifically for use with Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online exclusively to subscribers of the service. We see the need to develop the service beyond being merely digital, in ways play to our strengths as a company that operates an integrated hardware and software business.

Basically, this is just a beginning, of course that online service can be only better buy time.

that's a normal and expected, I mean even Sony/MS were in same position, in year from now people will get used to fact that you need to pay for online.

Also, online is far from great, but we talking about $20 per hole year, thats just one 1/3 of price of one AAA game.

The thing is your paying for something that isnt better than it was when it was free.

Also nes roms.... a big meh.

I am happy with it so far, but i only cared about the cloud-saves really. Having the NES app is also cool and it works great. My guess is that on the one year anniversary they will also add SNES-games

It isnt free because it never was meant to be, Nintendo just had a grace period, but guarantee if this improves so will the price (in Nintendo's favour)

i had fun on the first month, kept one more month and got bored with it and canceled it.

I haven't subscribed and at this point don't ever intend to. The only game I'd play online is Mario Kart.

Agree 100% with the first point. Nintendo is charging for an online service that’s the same as it’s always been. The paywall has not brought with it superior service. Also that Nintendo app has become a punchline, and cloud saves should really be gratis.

But I disagree with the second point. I’m really enjoying this NES Netflix-style service. According to my play time history, I’ve logged 10+ hours in it, thanks to family and friends who enjoy the old-school accessibility of the titles therein. Paying $17 a year for that (I have a split family plan) is fair, in my mind.

Nah, Nintendo will just continue to do it's own thing anyway and to be clearly honest, I'm kind of indifferent to this matter in the end since so few of my games are touched by this issue cuz of my single player focus experience (or manily my uses of online feature). I won't drown because I had to pay for 20 bucks with basic online features (I don't even have it right now actually ...). Voice chat ? I never used it before nor will I. Classic librairy ? It will grow out with time and we'll probably have SNES games added in a year or two.

But, just a reminder, that it is ok for people to wish for better things, there's nothing bad in doing so ... well, until you reach pure unreasonable entitlement for wanting an exact carbon copy of their competitiors while also paying 3x/4x less than they do.

I don't want an exact carbon copy of Games With Gold or PlayStation Now, I want Virtual Console back, because that was way better than what we're getting now.

The library will expand over time, just like the Virtual Console. I mean how was the VC back on Wii when it first launched?

Unfortunately, if you want to get more obscure and high-profile third party VC titles, I think they will be less frequent as third party companies are doing more compilations to get the money for themselves. Sega has its Sega Ages, Genesis Classics Collection, among others, Capcom just released Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and the Mega Man (and X) Collections, Konami released Castlevania Requiem, and so forth. So what we were getting then will likely not be got be what we could get if VC still existed.
