Is this just the next evolution or cheaper barrier to entry to Oculus VR?

Next evolution.

Kinda neither.
It's basically an all in one Oculus Rift, that doesnt require a PC or wires.
Or a very high end Oculus Go.

If this is equivalent to Rift, but wireless, I'll be picking one up near launch.

After reading the article, I see that it is not a rift equivalent. So, I'll take a wait-and-see approach.

So this is another of those low-end VR experiances where a mobile chip is inside it?
VR needs a beefy console or pc, so its graphics arnt craptastic imo.
Plus didnt the Oculus GO have like 2hours of battery life? seems like alot to give up, just to be able to have no wires.
You want VR without wires? sure just play crappy mobile powered games, and only for 2hours at a time, then go recharge it.
Its not optimal imo.

It'll be close spec wise. But i don't think it'll be able to connect to a PC.

They are pushing it as a high end mobile experience.
Bringing over some Rift games, will have to wait to see how comparable it is though.
This standalone devices all boil down to one thing - quality of inside-out tracking. So let's wait and see how good it is versus current devices with external sensors (OR, Vive and PSVR).
I think this will wind up being too weak to play real games. And by real games, I mean the same AAA experiences that are available on other platforms, like PC/PS4/XB1.
