hoped to see it already at tgs with a release date, but seems we have to wait for 2019

TranceformerFX said: For Square's sake, KH3 better sell like hot cakes. FF15 sold 6.5 million units so far, but the company goal was 10 million. Tomb Raider 2 didn't sell nearly as much as the 1st, and the recently released 3rd installment isn't expected to sell gobs of units either. Normally, 6.5 million units sold for a game would be super positive for most publishers, too bad Square Enix spends ALOT of money on polishing their graphics and constantly shifts dev teams from one project to another - driving up costs due to lengthier labor hours. If FF7R doesn't take off, that'll be the nail in the coffin. |
Nail in the coffin of what?
I am sure Square Enix was able to supplement the cost of development with the releases of the remixes for PS4, all of which used previous assets and all sold well. :-/

Where are you getting that 6.5m figure from? SE's most recent announcement puts the game at 8.1 million, so it's well on the way to hitting that long-term 10 million goal. While FF15 was likley an extremely expensive title to make (in part because of its troubled development), it still managed to break even within its first shipment. Add in the DLCs, which have done well enough for them to decide to make another three episodes, and I expect SE are overall very happy with FF15's performance. They probably wish it'd been received slightly better at launch, the game wasn't without its flaws, but commercially it's done well. With FF14 also just straight up printing money, Final Fantasy in general is in a pretty healthy place right now. If they learn from the mistakes they made with FF15, the series has a bright future ahead of it.
It's not just Final Fantasy either, Square Enix as a whole is doing well. While not every game is performing as it should (as you note, Tomb Raider in particular has arguably been mishandled), their big releases have overall been performing well. Thanks to that, they're been posting pretty beefy profits for a while now.

Well, not only are your numbers incorrect, you're missing what's most important is that Square hasn't lost any money on those projects (rise of the tomb raider may have lost money but it's not really relevant to their Japanese output). FF15 was profitable on day 1, and KH3 will almost certainly be as well.

Honestly I doubt that it lost money. Square announced nearly 7m sold for it back in November 2017, by now it's probably around 8m sold. If 8m in sales is a loss, the budget was much higher than it should have been. Also, MS paid them for the timed exclusivity, how much is unknown, but I would imagine that whatever they paid Square covered at least 30% of the game's budget. Also, I agree, FFXV was a definite success, I think it'll hit it's original 10m goal eventually. |
I just didn't know the most up to date figures for it. I know that it started kinda slow, which was to be expected. But the other side of that deal is that MS likely assisted with some of the promotional cost.

While I also don't think ROTR lost money, according to Benji, the timed exclusivity deal had a negative impact on the TR brand. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is probably the one we should be worried about returning a profit because someone on ERA mentioned that the combined development and advertising budget was ridiculously big.
I look forward to new "Death Stranding" and "Resident Evil 2 Remake" -infos :)
ps. "Onechanbara Origin" announced for PS4:
Am I the only one who think KH3 looks way better in the Pirates of the Caribbean World compared to the base world and other worlds? I like the graphics in the the Pirates world way more than the others.
