For Square's sake, KH3 better sell like hot cakes. FF15 sold 6.5 million units so far, but the company goal was 10 million. Tomb Raider 2 didn't sell nearly as much as the 1st, and the recently released 3rd installment isn't expected to sell gobs of units either.

Normally, 6.5 million units sold for a game would be super positive for most publishers, too bad Square Enix spends ALOT of money on polishing their graphics and constantly shifts dev teams from one project to another - driving up costs due to lengthier labor hours. If FF7R doesn't take off, that'll be the nail in the coffin.

Where are you getting that 6.5m figure from? SE's most recent announcement puts the game at 8.1 million, so it's well on the way to hitting that long-term 10 million goal. While FF15 was likley an extremely expensive title to make (in part because of its troubled development), it still managed to break even within its first shipment. Add in the DLCs, which have done well enough for them to decide to make another three episodes, and I expect SE are overall very happy with FF15's performance. They probably wish it'd been received slightly better at launch, the game wasn't without its flaws, but commercially it's done well. With FF14 also just straight up printing money, Final Fantasy in general is in a pretty healthy place right now. If they learn from the mistakes they made with FF15, the series has a bright future ahead of it.

It's not just Final Fantasy either, Square Enix as a whole is doing well. While not every game is performing as it should (as you note, Tomb Raider in particular has arguably been mishandled), their big releases have overall been performing well. Thanks to that, they're been posting pretty beefy profits for a while now.
