Almost beating Demon Souls, level 87 and only missing the final boss. It took me only 21 hours, this is probably less than half of what I needed for Dark Souls
I was expecting it to be a bit longer, I got underwhelmed realizing x-3 maps were basically only boss fights
Overall awesome game, really, probably the best I've played this year. I think I enjoyed boss design more here than in any Dark Souls, which have good bosses but I feel 80% of them is just about memorizing patterns and acting fast without needing to understand arena layout or how the bosses works. I actually like some of bosses are about only using arena inbyour favor.
Overall the magic build made everything easier than I'm used to, magic is extremely overpowered here some bosses were trivialize once I understood what to do with them. I guess I have beaten at least half of them without dying one single time, this is satisfying as Demon Souls layout put you very far from archstones with few exceptions
I've also found fighting with sorceres much more fun than with knights, I'm satisfied to finally getting a magic build working after many frustrated tries in DS lol
Level design is much better in DS though. It has much more clever maps with more things to discover and explore. I remember besting it and running to play it again only to see what I missed. Here... not quite really, I'm satisfied for now, I will try other game only for the please of testing another build. Dark Souls plays more like a 3D Metroidvania, while here the structure is much more linear (1-2 and 3-1 are the only maps that I can remember using items from later maps to unlock secrets)
Hopefully FromSoftware won't stop making Souls like games with tight design, I will miss them if they only go to open worlds like Elden Ring :/
Trying to decide what game I'll beat next, maybe FF 7 remake again or Crash 4 |
After the massive size and scale of Elden ring, I agree. I'd like for them to make another linear title like Demon's Souls, with worlds and levels, each one ending in a boss. Not that I don't LOVE Elden Ring (hoooo boy do I ever love that game), I just like mixing things up. We've had interconnected metroidvania worlds, we've had splaying start from the middle and go outwards worlds, and we've had open worlds, it's time to go back to linear world and level based design!
Or heck, try something entirely new. Not Procedural Generation, though. I think that'd ruin one of the things that makes Elden Ring and all Soulslikes so special, the tight level design. Not gonna lie, though, if Miyazaki made it, Id still give it a shot. I wouldn't be as excited but he has pretty consistently impressed me and the ONE time he wasn't directing a game (Dark Souls II) was the only souls game I didn't absolutely love.
