Nintendo can shut them down.
It doesn't matter how good the development team is, if Nintendo doesn't want it, or sees no value in keeping it afloat, they can just shut Retro Studios down.

It doesn't matter if Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was great, if Retro Studios cannot deliver the games Nintendo wants them to make, they are useless to Nintendo.
Retro Studios aren't independent, they don't get to decide their fate.

Nintendo can hire other studios to make Donkey Kong Country titles, if they want to.

They can.... but whos to say the quality in games would stay as high?
Would you want some random studio makeing DKC games?

Who cares about the quality if everything on the Switch will sell regardless.
Even a pretty mediocre Donkey Kong Country game would sell very well on the Switch, due in part to the work already done by Retro Studios.

Can Retro Studios even produce another Tropical Freeze.
Nintendo has more information regarding their current abilities as a studio.

Why the hell not? 20 years ago people would have said that no one but Rare should make a DKC game. Turns out it works perfectly ok without Rare. So I'm willing to give another Studio a chance.

They just need a kick up the arse...... you CANNOT shutdown the developers behinde DKC series... you just cant!

Also even if its some time ago, DKC TF is simply amasing.
Like its the best platformer the Wii U had.

Nintendo cant shut them down, they just need to get them working on the next DKC game.

You do realize that Retro didn't start the DKC series, right? That it was Rare who did, and then Retro took charge of the franchise. So if Nintendo has changed the developer of the franchise once, they can do it twice. And who knows, maybe the next developer will finally make the 3D DKC game that a lot of people are asking for.

As for the article behind this story, it's hard to say what's going on with so little info. When a studio is in trouble we use to know it because members of the staff talk about it with someone from the press or in some forum or the like, leading to rumors about problems and things not going well, but with Retro there's nothing like that, they're in complete silence. And we're talking about a studio that, when Nintendo fired its bosses after the first Metroid Prime game, we knew almost everything that happened about it. But then, it's been too many years without news about what they're working on, which is never a good sign.

I don't know what to believe, to be honest, but if by the end of the next E3 we still don't know anything about them, then it will be clear that something's wrong with Retro.

Please excuse my bad English.

A lot of time has passed since Tropical Freeze but that game was in my opinion masterfully crafted (one of my favourite platformers of all time) and sure proof that the studio still had it in them to make fantastic games. Things may have gone south from there but with their track record I hope Nintendo sees ditching the studio as their very last option because I really don't want to see them gone. Give them a chance to recover, have them work on a smaller project to get things rolling again.

Overblown, clickbait, overreactions everywhere.

There were only two glass door reviews. Nothing more. Somehow this turned into "Nintendo is shutting down Retro Studios".

If that's the case I don't even care if its Retro or not, but Nintendo must increase their output. Now it's more evident then ever.

I'm honestly just sick of hearing rumors about the studio. At this point, let's just let the work speak for itself. Wait for valid information. If nothing comes by the end of the year, yeah ... there's probably something wrong.

Why just this year?  It has already been 5 years since their last game...hell we still do not even know exactly what they are doing.  I'd say a cause for concern is more than justified right now, even without these negative reviews.

While the studio might have issues, it’s important to take into account that people are more likely to leave negative reviews than positive ones, especially for something like a day-to-day job. I remember my old apartment had almost entirely negative reviews on Google, while everyone there was generally positive, they just didn’t care enough to balance out the few people angry enough to go online and complain.

Think about this way, you go to two restaurants. One serves a nice tasty soup. The other serves a cold soup with a dead mouse inside, and when you complain the staff just mocks you. Which one are you more likely to tell people about?

I noticed this about the place I live, ha ha. "Why is it a two-star?" and every review is people complaining because of stupid stuff. Because people like to complain more than praise.

What Retro Studios need is head talent that has vision...
The studio won't be closed though because unlike the other companies Nintendo has stated that it is frowned upon to let employees go and that they try and refrain from doing so at all costs. As of late the studio has been relegated to a workhouse studio for doing extra tasks that Nintendo needs on their other in-house games, but the studio could really use somebody like an Amy Hennig or the like to give Retro a new identity
