I assume you're saying that's what happens with studios under Sony. Couldn't be further from the truth. Evolution Studios and Zipper Interactive had several duds before the teams were disbanded, for example. And, that's not 100% a fault of Sony's. Those teams weren't pulling their weight, and in this business, that's money you're costing your employer. No one knows what went on behind closed doors, but it's obvious that they had many more problems than any of Sony's other teams.

icognito got closed while making an 85 meta game warhawk as a final title

and Guerrila cambridge was the most headscratching closure ever along with liverpool. they made very cool unique stuff that was never a dud

he has a point

Those two studios closed and new studios not under Sony were created. They struck a deal with Sony to open their own studios and their first projects were Playstation exclusives. Starhawk by lightbox interactive and Guerilla cambridge had most of the employees absorbed into other SIE studios and they even had some go full indie and they are making a game called Röki which is not an exclusive i believe but they are getting some support to have it be released there.

Considering the sales of the PS4 in Japan, the studios Sony needs to actually buy is Level 5, and any other studio that makes great RPGs.

Japan is far from a dead region for PS4.

you should look up game sales for sony published games in japan

thats what matters.

What matters is that it isn't dead there. But, I'm learning - you have this thing with throwing out whatever sounds good in the moment, regardless of how preposterous it really is.

I mean its not preposterous. sony stopped making JRPGs long ago because the buyers aren't there anymore. they moved to phones

Sony isn't gonna buy a huge studio like level 5 to make japanese games. the profit isn't huge unless you are pushed by nintendo there

I can work with the idea that they won't buy a studio like Level-5. Where your train derails is in the "dead" proclamation.

I meant its dead as a major region.

now its just. a region. a country where your product sells. like idk germany or france. they are nowhere near the volume they were two generations or before.

it used to be comparable to north america. maybe a little less. now its not even quarter of north america. hell 10% or something like that for Sony.

I think it would be wise for Sony to focus more on Japanese games period. They're become far too westernized this generation imo.

if you do that. you have to do it when the generation starts immediately to catch on. they should probably try to penetrate the japanese market next gen by expanding japan studio teams and making them sort of run like Nintendo EAD. or acquire one or two small japanese studios

and try to make third party exclusuvie deals like nintendo does.

do I think sony will take that risk? no. because to be quite honest.  am not sure they would succeed . its so hard to sell games in japan, you need big names. they should try to drop the PS4 price to 299 when the PS5 comes out. and support it longeterm in japan. or drop it this or next year tbh

That is why Sony needs to buy Level5, and maybe mistwalker too.
