Were you around in 1998?

Yes, I was 3 years old and probably playing Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive.

I don't really care that much about that year, though. I'm sure it meant a lot to the industry but I think Ocarina of Time is overrated and with that, there goes the year. Of course, saying 2017 is undeniably the best year ever is pushing it, but denying it is one of the best is also pushing it.

2017 is pretty solid, but I dont think it's really close to 98 both in terms of quality and impact. 98 had way more than just OOT. MGS, Banjo, Xenogears, Resident Evil 2, Pokemon, Fallout 2, Grim Fandango, Thief, Half Life, Suikodden 2, Baldurs Gate....there's more. We're not even talking about 1997 with FF7, Goldeneye, Symphony of night, Starfox, DKR, and that year was preceded by Mario RPG, Mario 64, MK64, Res Evil, Tomb Raider. You have a stretch that is so stacked, even if 2017 was your personal favorite, there is no way 2016-2018 so far comes close to the above stretch.

2006-2010

So many great new IPs and great sequels during that time.

2006-2010. There were quite a lot of classic and new IP's during that time.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

This is the only answer I can't accept.

Now, you're free to disregard this because it's my opinion, and yours is yours.

I could argue with you, but I don't want to spend the next 2 hours naming all the great games during that time.

I voted the PS360 era due to the fact that the console wars were still fun at that time. People were able to joke without getting too offended (mostly) the crumb side of youtube was at an alltime high, most of the games we see today found its foundation during this time, and the start of online play became a major factor during this time.

However, pending on the factors, my answer can change. My most nostalgic time period was the N64 era.

And the PS2 era certainly gave us more quality content than any other generation before or after.

So in the end, it depends on my mood.

I am torn between 1991-1995 and 2006-2010.

The former had Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2, Doom, Yoshi's Island, Panzer Dragoon, Starfox, A Link to the Past...

The latter, Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Bioshock, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Dead Space, Bayonetta, Gears of War 1 & 2, Metroid Prime 3...

I'm personally as excited now as I have ever been, so I chose the current period. But, the Genesis/SNES era was also huge for me.

Gaming is constantly progressing. IMO, there is a noticeable improvement in the overall awesomeness of games every few years. So, in that respect, the most recent period will always be the best. With that said, I could make an argument for the PS2/XB era, as it brought about a shift in the major players - Sega left, MS entered, and Nintendo had recently been removed from the top spot. I could also make an argument for the early 80s, as that's really the period where gaming made its way into homes. Likewise, the NES/Master System era brought gaming into the mainstream.

To put it another way, I think major, positive movement occurred in just about all of those periods. But, since each period builds on the last, the most recent one is always the best.
