Forums - Sony Discussion - The PS4 really should have backwards compatibility!

You made the assertion that there are MILLIONS of costumers wanting BC, that should have moved the needle when X1 enabled BC, didn't happen. Sure there may be millions that would use (seems like from X1 that most didn't put more than 30m on it).

Correct. I did say millions. Not 10's of millions or 100's of millions.

2 million people wanting backwards compatibility when 100 million consoles have sold is only 2% of the platform base. Think about that for a moment.

With that in mind... One of the greatest aspects of the PC has been backwards compatibility, there is no need to worry about generations.
Last generation the Wii U, Wii, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, 3DS, DS all had backwards compatibility and lots of people used that functionality to various extents.

Is it a game changer? Hell no. But it's a feature that appeals to some.

It cost money to develop and make the BC on the console, the customers are the ones that are going to pay for it one way or another.

Yeah, I'm going to pay for it by buying more PS3 games.

And his point is that everyone is going to pay for it even the ones that doesn’t want it.

There haven’t been a 2M sales more than the previous year for X1 on a 30M userbase. So there you have that the supposed public interest wasn’t enough to even sell extra console.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

And how? Unless he's a shareholder, he already has a PS4 and it's not like they'll increase the price of the console.

I never said there was. Nor does there need to be.
You are forgetting the PC is in the "Backwards compatibility" camp as well remember.

In-fact... Gog.com has made an extremely profitable business out of it.

Besides... Microsoft has generally been met with approbation for it's efforts whilst Sony has been met with disquietude.

People arent forced to buy the console. Dont like the backwards compatibility? Don't buy it then.

Most people wouldnt be too bothered by it.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Yes, of course it should.

I rarely use the feature on XB1. But, there are a handful of PS3 games that I would like to play on my PS4 Pro. In fact, if PS4 had back-compat at launch, I'd have been much more likely to buy one at that point. Instead, I waited until the Pro to finally buy in.

PS4 can't emulate the PS3. The Cell CPU is too powerful to run on a PS4. High end PC's have trouble emulating PS3 games.

Sony have the source code and a lot of internal data that outsiders don't have, so if anyone can do it, they can.

They don't have a magic wand to make PS4 powerful enough to emulate a PS3. I doubt you understand just how weak the Jaguar CPU on the PS4 is and the difficulty of emulating a very different architecture on hardware that's not vastly superior to the hardware you want to emulate.

It would be possible on the PS5 if it has a Zen CPU there's no doubt about that. PS4 just no.

The PS4 is more powerful than a PS3, the argument that since PCs can't run it does sound fine, but even original Xbox games don't have solid emulators on the PC, despite the fact that the 360 had some BC support and the Xbox One does too:
