Forums - Sales - PAL Charts week 15 (2008) GT5 prologue VS Mario Kart

So afterall Mario Kart takes the top. But still 2nd place in its third week is quite good for GT5P. Maybe chart-track will say something more about MK/GT5 rivalization.

From charttrack:

"Nintendo overtakes Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’ at the top of the All Formats Chart as ‘Mario Kart Wii’ records the 8th biggest launch week ever in the UK. ‘Mario Kart Wii’ is far and away the biggest launch of any Nintendo published title. It’s also bigger than the launch weeks of all 5 other Mario Wii games combined (Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Strikers, Mario Party 8 and Super Paper Mario).

Mario has performed heroically on Nintendo’s next-gen format with Wii games featuring Mario accounting for 21.2% of all Wii units since the launch of the console in December 2006. There are now 4 Mario games in the All Formats Top 40 with Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ down one place to No3 (behind ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue), ‘New Super Mario Bros’ at No23 and ‘Mario Kart DS’ an All Formats Top 40 re-entry at No30. ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’, another strong performer on Nintendo Wii, is a non-mover at No4, while Ubisoft’s ‘Rainbow Six: Vegas 2’ continues to lose ground, down 2 places to No5.

Sales of ‘Condemned 2’ from Sega fall by 20% in its second week, down from No5 to No6, while Activision still have an All Formats Top 10 presence thanks to ‘Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock’ only falling 2 places to No8 and ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ climbing one place to No9. The new DS and PC versions of Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed’ help it sneak back up the chart, up from No27 to No15, but otherwise there are no All Format Top 40 new entries this week to compete with the blockbuster ‘Mario Kart Wii’."

Amazon UK just sold out of MK again.

So...?

Is amazon an indicator or sales?

Hmm...

OT: Mario Kart opens very nicely. It should be atop the charts for a long while.

Read above. I was only replying to a previous users assumptions.

So big mistake of me.

So BKK2, you can estimate the sales this week, because it must be a lot

Well obviously Mario Kart Wii was huge. Sales might be a lot better than I expected. Could have opened with 200k in the UK alone.

I expected better numbers for SSBB and MKWii is selling a lot better than SMG in Europe?

hmmm maybe I was right to call 1 mil WW this week...

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

bigjon- you may have been. I was thinking 800k WW opening week, but after hearing about these collosal numbers in the UK, I might be eating those words.

List compibled by BKK for top opennings in UK:

01:GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS PS2 (October 29 2004) [~677k]
02:HALO 3 360 (September 2007) [~465k]
03:HALO 2 XBOX (November 11 2004) [~260k]
04:GRAND THEFT AUTO: VICE CITY PS2 (October 27 2002) [250k-260k]
05:GRAN TURISMO 4 PS2 (March 09 2005) [250k-260k]
06:PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 5 PS2 (October 21 2005) [200k-250k]
**:PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 6 PS2 (october 27 2006) [186k-236k]
**:FIFA 08 PS2 (October 2007) [~174K]
**:FIFA 07 PS2 (September 29 2006) [125k-200k]
**:THE GETAWAY PS2 (December 2002) [125k-200k]

Mario Kart should be between 125-200k

Well to compare, GTPrologue is now the 20th best ever open for a game in UK (it was 19th but MKWii bumped it down 1), and it opened well over 100k(likely 120k or so)

So Zucas could be right about it selling 200k, I would peg it 165-215k or so in UK, and the UK is usually about 18-25% of total others. So I would put my early guess based off of this at sales of 650-800k this week in others.
