I really don't understand the point in berating people for, or acting like people are less valid for, critiquing games with a modern lense. Most good art stands up to the test of time, and that's the same with video games. You don't see people ridiculing Ocarina of Time for ridiculous reasons, like "the graphics are bad!" or "there's no HDR!". You DO see people critiquing aspects of the game that were always bad, but less noticeable in the past, however.

Exactly what I've been saying since the beginning of this thread. 

My only problem is when someone plays a 10 year old game and bases their examination and critique with modern games in mind. Not only is that unfair in a critic sense, but also in a biased sense. The only two mediums where its acceptable to grade a product where 10 years have gone by is Music, and Books. 

Video games, as well as movies - isn't one of them. 

That's why I find it particularly jarring when a 16 year old who's accustomed to playing modern games on a PS4 (or whatever it'd be) and bases their critique from his "modern" taste when he plays a retro game from the 90's.

Not only is that single minded, but it's also unprofessional. That's kinda why paid critics don't pull that crap - because they'd eventually get fired for subconscious bias.

So when ever I see someone saying that Final Fantasy VII is overrated, I literally roll my eyes so far back into my head that I might as well be cosplaying Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

A product aging is a natural consequence of time. The question is does it affect the quality of the work. The original 60s Star Trek series has aged terribly, with laughable effects, terrible portrayals of women, and some hammy acting in places. But it's still a good tv series with some amazing episodes 50 years later. With a game like Ocarina of Time, yes later Zelda games are better, as improvements in technical capabilities allowed for more refined combat and dungeons, but there being something better doesn't make Ocarina bad. The dungeons and puzzles are well-designed. Z-targeting may have been improved from the first implementation, but it still works just as intended. The bosses hold up. The inventory system is massively improved in the 3DS remake, but it was only ever a problem in the water temple. Outside of the visuals and the inventory the 3DS version really doesn't have any improvements over the original, and a new player can still pick the game up and have a blast with it 20 years later. It's not a case like Goldeneye where what once was great is now a giant pain to control (though I actually prefer Goldeneye's controls to many dual analog shooters' controls).

I think the main reason why Ocarina remained the most beloved 3D Zelda after so many years is that people found many problems in the post-N64 3D Zeldas that never allowed those games to be more popular than Ocarina, for example, in the case of Wind Waker many disliked the sailing and the tri-force quest (also, the game's dungeons are super simple),  with Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword many didn't like the padding, the relative linearity and the infamous "handholding" (I think some of the complaints regarding TP and SS are super exaggerated, but that's not the topic here).

Majora is kind of a special case because it ended up being almost as beloved as Ocarina, but it was until recently.

I did eventually finish RDR, but it took me a long time because the game just didn't hook me properly either. It was good while I was playing, but I never felt compelled to go back and play it when I was doing something else. Eventually I just kinda forced myself to finish it. I can see that it's a good game, but it just never held my interest for very long.

Agreed. I think good games are ones that involve and engross the player in the mechanics as much as possible. 

I like Uncharted (never played Last of Us), but a lot of what was highly revered in the game was the cinematics which to me are cool but not the main criteria of what I want in games. That's why I enjoy Nintendo games massively. The core game is never jeopardised even for the story.

And btw, stories in gaming are generally massively overrated. 

There have never been so many story-driven games in the market as there is today.

Yup. And god damn are they bad IMO.

For me every open world games is little or much overated ^^

But its about taste probably, i'm going very bored fast in them, so i really enjoy uncharted type of game !
