So this figure is really thanks to them and not switch or vr.

Game sales were in decline there since 2014. Even if they weren't the market leaders,a nice percentage came from them. It wasn't going to hit that numbers if they didn't helped.

The headline should read "UK game sales hit 5bn thanks mainly to xbox and playstation". They are the biggest contributers after all. 

This feat was reached thanks to new products selling exceptionally well. If on the Box Office Paramount sudently sees an ressurgence and help the industry to break a record, in the end of the day Paramount would reach the headlines,even if in the same year Disney and Warner sold more.

It's a weird way of doing things. 

It isn't really. Weird would be if they ignored that the boost came mainly from the new hardwares.

2017 was also the first year in a decade that the video game industry worldwide didn’t decline. It was a gigantic turnaround too: home console sales were the highest since 2010.

It's OK acknowledging the boost but the main story should be about what is driving the majority of the sales. 

Stories should highlight the most important facts not what will get the most clicks. Unfortunately it's all about the clicks..
