Forums - Politics Discussion - Forgoing Political Threads

So, as many of you who hang out in these political threads know, I am pretty radical in my beliefs. I have very revolutionary beliefs that are contrary to most of the people on this site. Well, after around a year or so hanging out and posting relatively frequently in those threads, I have decided that I'm going to finally just pull the trigger and filter them out. Now as to why I have decided to do this, there are a few reasons.

  1. I like talking to politics, so it's a topic of personal interest to me. However, since joining this site I have pretty much found someone that I can discuss politics with, making this place less necessary for political talk
  2. I also engaged in political threads as a way to attempt to change people's opinion, as I saw an alarming number of people who spouted views and beliefs that I considered to be very dangerous. However, I've come to the conclusion that no amount of effort, sources, time, etc. will change these people's minds so there is no point in engaging in such a futile effort
  3. Let's just face it, this place is not the best place to go for political discussion. Proper political discussion doesn't really work well in a forum of this nature
So, have my views changed? Well, to answer the question, I am still a socialist, and still an anarchist. And if you guys really want to talk about politics with me, you can still post on my wall and PM me. I guess I've just considered it a losing battle here, and while I am still concerned and afraid there's not much I can do about it.

I will miss you.

You do you. I'll never change my beliefs and neither should you if you feel that strongly about them.

If you want to change the opinion from someone, you first need to get friends with that person. You need to earn some amount of trust. Otherwise they will ignore everything you say, just because of the simple fact that they don't like you. It's stupid but also human. Changes in the minds of people need to happen slowly and the people need to feel good about it.

That said, it's a wise decision to not talk about politics sometimes. It can really get to your head and even lead to depressions and whatnot because this world is so damn fucked up. So it's good to take a rest every now and then from those discussions. They are about the most toxic discussions you will ever find.

Good.

Focus your energy on memetology and its sister field memetic engineering instead.

Points 2 and 3 are why I don't like discussing politics, especially online. When the side with the opposing view has decided they're right, the discussion is already doomed. It'd be a miracle if everyone was right at the same time, so everyone would do well to be a little open-minded. The chances are that most people are wrong with at least some of their political views, so while it might be hard to change one's views, it would still be good to doubt even your own views.

Point 3 seems to apply to most of the internet, really. Places where good politics discussion can occur seem to be quite rare on the internet.

not a good idea... and i'm speaking generally here not about you specifically , but the only way you can evolve and grow is to constantly have your beliefs attacked and challenged by yourself and external forces over and over and over again

the minute your beliefs become too sacred to you to be challenged is the minute you've stifled your growth towards something that's more balanced and that's the greatest disservice anyone can subject themselves to, but its up to the person in question to make that decision

you also have to consider why someone may not want to have certain ideas discussed, could it be because there is a lack of coherency or supporting evidence? well quite often that happens to be the case, i've seen that many many times on the internet across different sites and its sad, all that happens as a result is people getting split off into groups unwilling to discuss things with each other, which over time leads to even greater conflict since if people are unwilling to talk things out they eventually start fighting

that's not true, this is only the case if the person isn't really open to discussion anyway

but there are many people who like to test ideas as much as possible whether they are speaking with people they consider to be friend or foe, which i think personally is the best pathway

Which is true for most people on this planet. And just for the record, I'm not excluding myself here. It's always a difference if a friend or some random dude tells me something. That said, I try to be open minded and test ideas and everything, but I do not always succeed in that.
