Thats a huge amount of pre-orders for US only. 2 to 3 million preorders. The total for the week sales of GTA 4 could well be 6 to 7 million world wide sales. PS3 will sell more hardware due to the fact that most people who want a 360 already own one.

Lets put this in perspective.

GTA San Andreas was 6:1 for PS2:XB, with 5 times install base, released almost a year earlier and much bigger legs.

GTA4 is currently 1.8:1 in NA for 360:PS3, and not announced for Europe, but in order to reach 1:1 WW, Europe needs to make 1m sales >360 first week for PS3. The most that any mulitplatform game where the PS3>360 is 0.48 for Pro Evo 2008, and this is only 1 game and this is LTD, 360 clearly outsells on almost every other multi-platform game. The install base WW is 1.6:1 for 360:PS3 at the moment.

Yes the bulk of sales is obviously during Xmas. 360 is expected to make a price cut this year in NA, with one already in Europe. At Xmas, GTA4+360=$360/£200, GTA4+PS3=$460/£310. Yes I dont expect PS3 to make a cut because they have slashed price so much already and even if they do, 360 is the cheaper option.

Please tell me what is your definition of a significant lead worldwide for PS3, give me a ratio. Even 2:1 at this point is very unlikely.

I wonder whats the sittuation in Europe and what effect the PS3 bundle had :? It will be one interesting battle :D

Sure the 360 has an install base advantage for North America, but IMO more Playstation supporters are likely to buy this game. The current 360 install base seems to be mostly former XBox owners, due to nearly all popular XBox games having received sequels on the 360 and premature demise of the original XBox nearly 3 years ago.

Most PS2 gamers still haven't upgraded towards the PS3, many waiting for the big sequels announced for release this year and the years ahead. I think GTA IV will have long legs on the PS3, with PS2 gamers upgrading towards a PS3.

One interesting point is that Sony offers GTA4 bundle only in Europe and there is nothing indicating that they would offer same bundle in North America. On the other hand MS did drop XBox360 price in Europe, even they are complaining about shortages with US version of Premium and Elite.  Could it be possible that MS have rights to bundle GTA4 in North America and they stock up consoles for maximum impact and sales of XBox360 and GTA4 bundle?

Even if MikeB is not answering, I would be very interested to hear from anyone else who thinks PS3 version will take a significant lead on 360 version worldwide for software and what is their predicted ratio 360:PS3.

i think the 360 version will outsell the ps3 now that i think about it, but i also think that the ps3 version will shift more hardware, and 360:ps3 ratio will be closer than people think.
