ps3 sold 87 million, launching late in europe it's best region, and being over priced for the market. i don't see anyway it would have not sold over a 100 million, 360 sales would have sold much worse in europe, because playstation is a much stronger brand, but the price 499$ euros, which is like 700-800$ at the time. I don't see nothing ignorant in my post. just look at ps4 sales in europe after sony got it right.

The PS3 cost Sony an estimated ~$800 to make per unit at launch for the 20GB model. They were losing  ~$200 to $300 per unit sold. And you're here talking about a $399 launch. It takes a lot more than a lower launch price for the PS3 to not be a disaster, and it takes a lot more than that for them to make up the 15 Million gap on the Wii.

Well yea, i knew ps3 cost 800$, to make. ps3 had massive flaws the way the designed the hardware, and it was too early for blue ray. when i talk 399$ model would be more like a refined 360 because thats the only way it would be 399$, that 15 million gap would be nothing if they launched in europe for the 2006 holidays, and been at 399$, 360 would have sold significantly less in america  and especially  europe. xbox and ps roles have been reversed  this gen, see the difference. even worse xbox brand was super weak when 360 launched, even with making the brand much stronger, its getting owned because it made similar mistakes to ps3 lastgen .

So the PS3 would have won the generation if it wasn't actually the PS3.

Got it.

I think it's safe to say that Switch will be up year over year in January 2018, so all the decline and stagnation talk doesn't make sense.

Yeah but after the January Direct dooms Nintendo February will be down yoy.

not really. this like saying the xbone would not be xbone if microsoft  didn't design it around kinect, and made better specs. it's not rocket science, they chose a very over priced design out of many options.

how?

The implication that if Sony released the PS3 at $399 they would have won the generation.

So you think a console that released for 599 and ended up selling almost 90M couldn't add another 13M if launching for 399?

it should obvious that ps3 would have, and easily a lot more, PS brand is so much stronger then xbox especially back then, where xbox was not a big brand but the price differnce resulted in people picking up 360. now look at this  gen xbox one became cheaper then ps4 within a year, and it still got destroyed in sales, xbox can not compete with playstation brand WW, when they made all the right moves with 360 they still got beat.

You had 16 hours to read the rest of that conversation.

Actually no, I answered your post as soon as I read it, then I read the other ones.

But the initial point on this argument of price is stand alone. PS3 launching for 399 would win the gen, the fact that Sony would go under pertains to the cost to make the units not to the price sensitiveness of the market.

The PS3 launching at that price would force Sony to kill the machine and relaunch with something that wouldn't cripple the company.

Be realistic if you're going to do classic comparisons. Don't hit people with ifs and buts.
