Cannibalize - When a company reduces the sales of one of its products by introducing another similar product.
So, if the Switch were cannibalizing the sales of any product, it would be the 3DS and/or Wii U, since both systems are made by Nintendo.
So, "cannibalize" isn't the right word here.

As far as the PS4 goes, with or without the Switch, it would still be selling the numbers that it is selling because the dedicated console market in Japan is in decline, it's been in decline for a long time now.

Japanese Home Console Sales:
PS1-N64-Saturn: 30.7 million
PS2-GC-XB-DC: 30 million
PS3-360-Wii: 24.9 million
PS4-XB1-Wii U: 8.86 million (thus far)

Based on where the dedicated home console market in Japan is today compared to 10-15 years ago, the ceiling has gotten considerably lower for the PS4.
Best case scenario I see is that the PS4 sells 15 million in Japan, but that would still put it well below the PS1 and especially the PS2. And the PS4 is the current leader in the dedicated home console market. It's no fault of Sony's, the market is just not there the way it used to.

As for the Switch, it was obvious from its reveal that the Switch would take over Japan and become THE new king of that market and no amount of Monster Hunter for PS4 can change that outcome. Even the most skeptic and pessimistic doubters of the Switch at the time of its reveal said it would at least do well in Japan.

So, long story short. The sales of the Switch and PS4 have nothing or at least very little to do with each other.
One is selling in a market that is on the decline. The other is selling because it is serving as a bridge between that market and the new dominant, portable market, and quite simply, it's the next Nintendo portable.

Cannibalize is the wrong word yes, but anyone thinking that the Switch and the PS4 are not stealing sales from one another is just being delusional.

There are people out there in the world, or in this case Japan, that are choosing between the two. If both didn't exist, they would get the one that did. But since they both exist, some people are choosing one or the other.

At the moment the PS4 isn't as intresting for Japan as during Q42016. Simply because nothing interesting released on it since dragon quest XI for the Japanese market. 2016 had the release of FFXV. Q1 2018 will be pretty bug though and in the end PS4 sales will fall short or equal PS3 sales in Japan, because the market for home consoles is declining over there.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Switch is cannibalizing Wii U sales in Japan

Primary the Wiiu sales, then PS vita SAles, in 2018 3DS remains sales.

The switch is the sucessor of the 3DS, Wiiu and Vita.

PS isn't Nintendo so 'cannibalizing' the right word for Vita

I think the word Kerotan wants is Competing

You do realize cannibals eat their own right?

yeah, all are videogames, right?

Same species :)

Not when it comes to business, you wouldn't say Toyota is cannibalizing sales of Honda. You might say the Rav 4 is cannibalizing sales of Corolla or something along those lines...

While I agree that switch can be the successor to all 3 of those consoles it's not the reason for the vita dying. The writing was on the wall for the vita before the switch was even announced.

It's no cannibalism if they're products in competition with each other.

I know that folks but cannibalizing is the word people were using in the other thread. Just shows how ridiculous that argument was.

The vita pipeline will migrate to Switch. This why switch is the sucessor of Wiiu, 3ds and psvita ( the wiiu pipeline, 3ds pipeline and vita pipeline alltogether).

never heard of it

The problem is, you're the first person I've ever heard saying that, so there is no issue to discuss.

I thought that it was pretty much common knowledge that sales of Nintendo systems are almost completely unrelated to the sales of other systems.

I agree with you but apparently this isn't the case in the latest media create thread. Certain users are pushing this whole new idea. Might aswell nip it in the bud now because it's going to be repeated weekly on the threads otherwise.

If you're going to say that "certain users" are pushing it, at least provide links to the posts.

PS4 sales are going down due to age and all of the big system sellers being out. I mean Dragon Quest just got released. How much bigger can they get? It is obvious that the system is going decline next year in Japan but it's due to age not the Switch. Well realistically Switch does have some affect but not huge.

Keep in mind that the Switch is competing with the PS5. Will the Switch eat into PS5 sales in a significant degree? I vote it can but that's it's own thread.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true. 2nd UPDATE: I have no Switch 2. I am now behind

I don't think Kerotan gets the irony in tagging "Top Spin" for this thread.
