As a portion of the global market, and even compared to what it was in the past, the Japanese market has shrunk. Europe becoming a major market for consoles hit both NA and Japan's share in Gen 5, and it was also the largest generation in Japan for home consoles, so let's start there. 145M consoles were sold globally that generation, with Japan representing 30.4M of that total, a share of 21%. In Gen 6, Japan's share of the global home console market declined to 13.5%. Last generation, their share dropped to 9.2%. Overall, Gen 7 systems sold roughly 12.7% fewer units than Gen 6 systems did. Home console sales in Japan haven't been over 3 million in a given calendar year since 2010.

For PlayStation in particular, Japan was responsible for 18.4% of global PS1 sales, 14.2% of PS2 sales, less than 13% of PS3 sales, and, as of September, maybe about 8-9% of PS4 sales. While the PS2 sold 54.6% and ~50% more units than the PS1 in the U.S. and Europe, respectively, in Japan the PS2 sold only 16.8% more units than the PS1. And despite effectively dominating the AAA market in Japan, the PS3 sold less than half what the PS2 did. Also, while the PS4 has been handily outpacing the PS3 by a considerable margin in the U.S. and Europe, it's only about on par with the PS3 in Japan.

And last generation, while the Wii was a juggernaut in the U.S., becoming the best-selling Nintendo system by far here (and the #3 best-selling console overall), and did extremely well in Europe (#4 all-time best seller, just behind the PS3, and well ahead of #5-ranked Xbox 360), in Japan the Wii sold fewer than 13 million units, falling well short of the NES and SNES, and while it is the fifth best-selling home console ever in Japan, it's a rather distant fifth.

While Japan is far from irrelevant, they are less important than they used to be in terms of their share of global sales, for both home consoles as a whole and for PlayStation in specific.

Excellent post as usual. I always agreed that in terms of global share try are less relevant but this gen the ps4 is more important to Sony then last gen. And the reason for that is because they are selling more units then last gen but also making a much bigger profit.

Of course they care about Japan, because Japan is where a lot of unique videogames actually originate from.

The reason people are quick to trash on Japanese sales, particularly in regards to PlayStation, is because of a gigantic drop in sales over the years. The original PlayStation and the PlayStation 2 sold over 40 Million units combined. PSP sold 20 Million units.

The ratio of consoles sold between Europe and Japan for PlayStation used to be 2:1, but with Sony's failures over there the ratio for PS3 was 3:1, and the PS4 is edging ever closer to 5:1.

Japan is important, but it's no where near as important as it used to be. It's really rather pathetic to compare PS Japan of 15 years ago to PS Japan of 2017. All of this happens while Nintendo are still seeing platforms able to set the charts on fire - DS sold 33 Million, 3DS is at 24 Million and Switch is currently stomping the competition.

That's why people say Japan isn't a priority.

@bold The drop in HW sales since Japan has declined, has been just as harsh for Nintendo if not moreso. Of course Switch might change things.

Sony                                       Nintendo

PS3+PSP= ~30m                   Wii+DS= ~46m

PS4+Vita= ~11m+                 Wii U+ 3DS= ~27m

??????????                            Switch= ??

But to be real Nintendo has pretty much always outsold Sony in Japan due to handheld domination.

You linked posts from 3 people, two of which are saying that Japan is LESS relevant for home consoles than it has been in the past, which is true. Which is undeniably true.

How is the country less relevant to Sony when this gen their home console is selling more then their last gen console?

More importantly ps4 profits are massively bigger then ps3 was at this point last gen. Sony are a business who want profits and to me this makes Japan more relevant and important this gen.

Last gen Sony also had the PSP which did great. But now it is just the PS4 where the Vita is falling down. What does that mean?

In the context of my thread, nothing.  Make another thread if you want to discuss that aspect of it.

the fact is that the way people in japan play games changed a lot, and sadly sony doesn't have interest anymore in making first party jrpg's, what i can understand at the moment

The topic was on whether Japan is not important to sony then you showed the PS4 numbers. But Sony isn't just the PS4. Last gen they had the PS3 and PSP. This gen they have PS4 and Vita.

Wrong.

The topic is on whether ps4 is important to Sony in Japan. If you want to go off topic make your own thread.

Japan is becoming less relevant for Sony. You have to ask yourself - why aren’t they making Japanese-centric games? A JRPG? An anime game or anime tie-in game?

Even more than that, we have to look at the Japanese culture and way of life. They live in small boxes and spend a lot of their time outside. Console gaming just doesn’t suit them anymore.

They make japanese centric game, Gravity Rush 2, Everbodies Golf to name a view. Japanese are very diverse, they buy a PS4 also because of AAA games like Uncharted 4 and Horizon, because if they wanted an Anime style JRPG so bad they could also get it on their mobile phone.

All this generation we've listened to people act like Japan is irrelevant to Sony and the ps4. Saying this like Sony don't care and Japan isn't important .

Well I checked the numbers and it looks like Japan is second only to the US.  It beats the UK and germany.  And this is despite launching later then these regions. Funny how these same people describe ps4 sales as amazing in the UK and germany. And they wouldn't dare call the UK/German market irrelevant and unimportant to Sony.

PS4 Sales by country:

#1 US 20m

#2 Japan 5.4m

#3 Germany 4.7m

#4 UK 4.3m

#5 France 3.7m

Let this kill the myth that Japan is not important to Sony and they'd not be bothered without it. They care a lot, I guarantee you that.

Adjusted per capita

1. United Kingdom - .066 or 6.6% of total populatoin

2. United States - .061 or 6.1% of total population

3. Germany - .056 or 5.6% of total population

4. France - .055 or 5.5% of total population

5. Japan - .039 or 3.9% of total population

Adjusted per capita (excluding 65+ year olds.)

1. United Kingdom - .08 or 8.0% of gaming-aged population

2. United States - .073 or 7.3% of gaming-aged population

3. Germany - .072 or 7.2% of gaming-aged population

4. France - .068 or 6.8% of gaming-aged population

5. Japan - .058 or 5.8% of gaming-aged population

As you can see, Japan is lagging behind those other countries when we roughly adjust for population and age-demographics.

add in the Switch and its reversed

Japan is a very important market to try and get a foothold in. Why do you think Microsoft keep trying with Xbox.
