Forums - Gaming - Hawaii takes a stand against loot-boxes

Isn't Valve doing the same shit with Team Fortress 2, too?

So much talk about loot boxes. Could somebody explain to me just what a loot box is!?!?

Microtransactions, except instead of buying an in-game item you get a randomly selected in-game item/s. Could be a good one that (to some people) is worth the money, or more likely is a pretty shitty one. They're to encourage people to keep paying more and more money either in an effort to get the good things or in order to "catch 'em all", as opposed to regular microtransactions where you buy what you want and only what you want and then don't spend any more money.

Hey!  That’s an insult to the series where you actually Catch ‘Em All!  D:

AH! Now I understand, they actually have those in Rocket League.

I find it hard to see what the massive problem is then tbh. They arnt manditory and it’s conoletely up to the gamer whether they want to waste their own money on them. I guess if people keep wasting their money on them then developers will keep using them. I play rocket league a lot but never spend and money on those daft boxes.

Add me if you want but let me know youre from this website

Complained about loot boxes years ago in Mass Effect 3.
Complained about them again in Overwatch last year. (Especially due to the fact it was very light on content, heck it still is.)
And complained about them again this year in Battlefront 2.

It's nice seeing some of the people who were supporting such schemes changing tact, the industry, consumers, news outlets and so on are sick of it.
And that's a good thing.

Personally... I would like to see a return of the expansion pack... They were great. They gave you almost an entire new games worth of content for a good price. (That was lower than the base game.)

Sums up the current state of loot boxes and how they're harming the consumer, the industry, and the games themselves better than I could. Worth a watch when you have time. 'Optional' and 'cosmetic' are no longer good excuses - if they ever were.

The outrage is spreading.

Casinos and drugs aren't mandatory either. Yet somehow both are heavily regulated. Keywords here are "predatory" and "addiction".

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

From my point of view, it would not be so good if law gets involved.

Loot boxes are nothing new, trading/collectible sport cards and CCGs have been around for decades and I couldn't care less - I'll never play MTG or any other CCG, cause there are enough excellent card games that don't rely on boosters.

But problem with video games is that a lot of AAA publishers have started using them...which, just like microstransactions, eventually cuts into game design to accommodate for that shit.

Now, if they pass some law (highly unlikely) that lootboxes are gambling, great, no more of that crap in VGs...but that might hit CCGs as well - personally, I don't care, but the thing is, CCGs like MTG keep A LOT of boardgame shops running.

So, again, from my point of view, not so good.

i wanna see Disney right now and the fire they lit under EA's asses lol.

I say developers should do what they want and see how many gamers follow them.

There has been a backlash and results even without government stepping in.
