Forums - Gaming - GTAIV Censored in Australia

Video games are used for entertainment, same goes for movies. When I play Fallout and get addicted to drugs, I don't leave the house and start a crack binge.

When I played the older Ultima games like The Black Gate. I could walk down an old dirt street and swing my sword at the town kids and watch there guts spill out. Doesn't make me want to pick up a sword and start doing the same thing in real life.

It all comes down to the parents of the kids. They should know what they are playing, these games are made for adults only. Video games and movies should never take the  place of a parent.

"We all know drunk driving is wrong. That's a given. But the moment you think a piece of artistic material should be changed to reflect the current popular opinion's viewpoint, you step onto a very slippery slope."

see you agree that drunk driving is wrong...so why support its purpose in a game....drunk driving is not art

dealing with the trials and tribulations of an upcoming thug as he quests to find his pplace in the urban society..that can be art

Telling someone what or what is not art is one of the first steps to censorship.

sometimes there needs to be censorship...its not always a bad thing

It's always a bad thing.

Who decides what gets censored? Who declares themselves so omnipotent as to believe their line of thought is the only correct one?

Most importantly, what happens when you disagree?

Nope, but when I do, I'll pay damned close attention to what they're doing. It's not society's job to raise a child.

I read my first Stephen King book at age nine and watched A Clockwork Orange at eleven. My parents were of the opinion that if I could comprehend what was happening and deal with it in a rational manner, it was acceptable to let me explore somewhat questionable material. I will do the same for my children.

This cencorship is by no means negative , I could even argue I was taking the objective standpoint in saying so.

Killing takes lives

Drink Driving Takes Lives

Drugs takes lives

Cars also takes lives ( but the benefits of cars such as ease of transport, ambulances, economy make it apparent that the benefits of veichles outweigh the apparent disadvantages.)

It's generaly accepted that Killing,Drink Driving and Drugs are harmful because of the apparent effect they have on people , we aren't dependant upon them for happiness, economic growth, survival etc infact their benefits are tiny and often limited to an individual therfore we can come to the pretty objective conclusion that the above are indeed bad.the benefits of these things are significantly outweighed by the disadvantages.

If you put all these bad elements(objectivley speaking) into a game then censorship of this is reasonable regardless of what you opinion is.

Obviously no human can truly claim the objective standpoint but that's another argument.

And who, pray tell, gets to decide this?

Good question , obviously there is no moral elite , people don't care about what the bible has to say about anything anymore so the only real decision make which we can (I don't think we should though) rely upon is society. If society feels it's bad then it's exactly that, the majority wins and no opinion is greater than the majority opinion no matter how valid it is.

I hope you will be thee for them to always protect, but knowing that you are human (well if you go by AOA your actually some type of lizard) you will make mistakes, and at some point something will get by you and reach your kids…

Say for instance you turn on a cartoon for them to watch that normally isn’t bad and leave the room to make lunch…while you are gone one of the characters of the show rapes another…completely out of the blue and total off key from the normal show…wouldn’t you want some type of censorship here?

Why would you want to stack the deck against yourself….would you want every break you can get on you side?

Slavery rocked, yo.

Not if it involved stacking the deck against myself in the process. Hiding behind a "we're protecting the children" line is often how people do some of the most devious and terrible things to one another.
