I'm still looking forward to this one. Haven't played the original but loved Xenoblade 2. Hopefully, it's not just nostalgia when people say this is the best in the series. The characters look interesting, at the very least!

It's not nostalgia; of the three XBC1 has the best characters, soundtrack, story, combat, and doesn't have any significant flaws like XCX's padding or XBC2's field skill roadblocks. All three are really good games but the original is simply the most consistently excellent.

It's not so much nostalgia as it is seeing something like it for the first time. It's somewhat comparable to Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess where people would swear that the former is a much better game despite the latter evolving virtually everything. XC2 was never going to have the same wow factor as the first game.

That being said, it's already confirmed that the Definitive Edition cleans up some of the shortcomings in the original design, so quest givers are easier to locate just like quest objectives themselves. The affinity chart that expands the more people you've helped was already a nice touch in the original, but the DE will include additional information.

Personally, I consider XC2 the better game, but it's a very small gap between the two games, so it's not like you could go wrong with either one of them.

It's not nostalgia, the original game is seriously just better, it's nothing to do with a problem like Twilight had with Ocarina.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Yeah, I just play the game and see a judgement for myself. Red flags are risen when I see people mention how XC combat system I supposedly better, yet XCX virtually did the same but simply better already. XC2 was different and while slower is a more competent evolution by the end and intesresting.

Then Torna happened and I was ultimately conquered. I swear, it has such a great flow to it. I would consider it a waste if they never use it for another game.

What made XBC's combat better for me was the "see the future" mechanic missing from the others. XBC2's combat... I wasn't a huge fan of the whole system of building up combos to create orbs then shattering those orbs, it felt a bit convoluted, I preferred the first two game's systems of just doing damage over time. Enemies in XBC2 also had too many unfairly overpowered attacks.

You use combos to initiate battles effects that block those powerful attacks hence why each element caused a different active effect adding a layer of strategy in what combos you chose to do, I have to agree with them on combat XBC2 is superior in that regard especially as unlike prior games the blade system in XBC was more build centric making allowing the party more customization for battle, gameplay wise I have to give it to the third game. World wise the other 2 games are superior with X being top while story wise the first overall is better for slightly more consistency but XBC2 does a better job in developing the characters which really comes into play in the second half of the game and the DLC.

Future Connected is said to make changes to combat, either way all of this is good for the next installments of the series as it has three variants of the approach to change things up with.

Still preferred the simplicity of XBC1, it felt more like combat and less like a complicated puzzle. And the "see the future" mechanic was just so freaking cool.
Also just had less annoying moments in XBC1 than its sequels, both story and gameplay wise.

Most of the people who say that the first game is better have probably not played the first game again after they had played the second one. That's how these things often go: The new game is judged by reality, the old game by memories.

But I've seen stranger things. Like the cult surrounding Eternal Darkness. When you talk to those people, it usually turns out that they couldn't be bothered to unlock the game's true ending.

Eternal Darkness was awesome, and I did unlock the true ending.  Very clunky compared to modern games, but the atmosphere and creativity hold up.

Disagree about XC1 has better characters and soundtrack. Reyn/Sharla and Mumkhar/Dickson are not better than XC2 characters/villains. Music is depends on taste, i like One Last You way more than Beyond The Sky for example.

It all depends on taste. I absolutely found XBC1's cast more charismatic and appealing and less annoying than XBC2's.

Any villain in XC2 has their own back story and reasons, but in XC1, Lothiria didn't have any, and Mumkhar, his reason is silly as hell with no depth, then Shulk even tried to forgive him for all the people he did kill and turned them into mechon, ok. Then, look at Reyn, outside being Shulk best friend, he is basically almost nonexistence unless it involved Sharla. Just like Reyn, Sharla is irrelevant to the main story unless it is related to Juju or Gadolt. Music, agree with you, totally based on taste.

Spoiler!
Lorithia did have reason, she wanted to keep the High Entia bloodline clean, she was racially motivated. Mumkhar may not have had a teary backstory. but he doesn't need one, he's just an enjoyably hateable example of what happens when a selfish person is given great power.`

Plus the characters in XBC2 were sometimes cringey and annoying to a degree that none of XBC1's character ever are.
