Meh, I'll believe it when I see it.
Oh wait!

Smash 5 in just 4 years after Smash 4, (less than 3 if you're counting the last of the DLC released in February 2016), which was 6 and a half years after Brawl, which was 6 and a half years after Melee? Yeah, I don't think so. Sakurai being burnt out and tired of it is part of the reason why those games have taken so long. You don't think he feels, after releasing each game: "(SIGH) Finally! I can take a long break and get away from it all for a while. Recharge my batteries and then come back and do it again when I'm nice and ready." That's the type of guy he is. He doesn't like being given work after work, assignment after assignment, on the company's terms instead of his. That's the reason he left HAL Laboratory, even though Kirby is his baby. That's why Brawl, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Smash 4 are the only 3 games he has worked on since 2005. He marches to the beat of his own drum.

Given the sales of 3D Mario, Mario Kart, and Pokemon, I think calling Smash their only S tier franchise very hyperbolic. And Fire Emblem is above Kirby and Yoshi now, gotta say.
And I don't think Smash 5 is coming in 2018. I also don't think Smash 4 is either. Because contrary to the rhetoric of some, Nintendo doesn't "need" Smash in 2018. They have numerous other franchises, this isn't the Wii U that was on death's door in 2014 before Kart arrived and Smash hype ramped up (though it proved a very short lived revival). I could absolutely see Smash announced in 2018 to be released in 2019. And assuming GCN Virtual Console shows up, Smash Melee may be a good thing to push out immediately.
My guess for 2018's big Holiday title is Pomemon, Animal Crossing, or some unannounced game. They are playing with their cards very close to the vest though so hard to say. But I think there will be far fewer Wii U ports coming than people are thinking. Nintendo seems quite aware of how that move could backfire on them in a public relations sense.
Also, you talk about how extremely long dev time for Smash is...then point out Smash 4 was developed in a little lver 2 years :P

True, but as much as I love Smash 4 I also would appreciate if Smash 5 was actually SMALLER in scale. This gigantism leads nowhere. I would drop all double characters for example, like Dr. Mario. My two cents. |
I haven't even started thinking about Smash 5, since I'm still waiting to see what they do with Smash 4 on Switch first (assuming that's the case).
Smash 5 can wait until next generation like every other Smash.

Yeah, i agree with this. Smash can wait.
Maybe we will see SSB for Switch in 2018 (something between SSB4 DX and SSB5). It would be a good game for promoting online subscriptions (and amiibo).

Smash 5 will come out for Switch. As will Mario Kart 9. It's a matter of when. Not if.
Releasing new entries in franchises both active and dormant, and possibly new I.P's. Plus DX versions.
I must say, let's see what you've got for 2018 Nintendo.
The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?
Really hope so.
Although this year will be hard to beat (mario, zelda, mario kart, splatoon).

Take MGS V off that list and you have a very plausible bet.

Where are you getting this from? I'm constantly seeing people begging for Smash, and while that's probably just the hardcore minority, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of the best selling Switch games despite being an enhanced port that some said no one would want. While I agree the Switch doesn't need a Smash 4 remaster, I don't see how releasing it would hurt more than help, and yeah I wont deny that I want it too. :P
Also Fire Emblem is bigger than Kirby n Yoshi only by a couple hundred thousand (based on sales of their recent games) so I would still put them in the same sales tier of 1-2 million, though I do believe FE Switch has potential to take the series even higher if it's done excellently.
