20 in 20 years.

If I had to wait an average of one year in between each piece of candy I'd have Gollum levels of withdrawal.

You were saying, Fury?  Cause looking at this they gave one in 2011, zero in 2012, two in 2013, one in 2014, one in 2015, zero in 2016, and so far two in 2017.  Do enlighten us as to when this famously reliable and tough reviewer went soft and started handing out these 10s with such abandon.

It's amazing how Edge's reputation as a hardass was virtually unchallenged...before Breath of the Wild got a 10.

5 in their first 14 years. 15 in the last 10. My point still stands.

Like candy, I tells ya.

The output of games soared for 2007-2009. I think it might be due to that. We had a handful of excellent games in the early days of Wii/PS3/X360. They all were blessed with gems during what I consider the most balanced generation of all.

I have been continually impressed with the sustaoned quality of the Super Mario games. i haven't really played one since the N64 days but man does Nintendo make me wanna buy their consoles to just exclusively play their games.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

LittleBigPlanet and Skyward Sword? What were they smoking?

Although they do have Bloodborne on there. Can't disagree with that. In fact the only titles I disagree with being given 10/10 are LBP, Skyward Sword, and the Devil May Cry clones Bayonetta games. That said, I am curious as to how Halo 1 and 3 made the cut, but not the best (Halo 2).

I'm not sure how much of LBP you actually tried but that game is a legit classic.

Halo 1 pioneered the formula, Halo 2 evolved it, and Halo 3 perfected it. Sounds about right that Halo 2 just misses out.

If anything there were some notable omissions (Red Dead Redemption, Xenoblade, Deus Ex, Metroid Prime, Bioshock all come to mind).

Being a great game doesn't guarantee you a 10 in Edge as they also look at what innovations are added, what the game does with its formula, design, art direction and for the genre as well as great execution being as Edge is an industry magazine not a consumer one, all the games given 10s so far by them can be argued to have done so. The omitted games you brought up are great games but techically didn't check all the boxes for a 10, for example Bioshock borrows from System Shock, Metroid Prime's control set up was a bit tedious for some people which could hamper play, RDR is the usual R* formula in a different setting. Only Xenoblade and Deus Ex can really be argued in the sense of ticking all boxes.

Only game I really disagree with is GTAIV but it can be argued otherwise as mentioned because of the more industrial focus of Edge.

You make a lot of good points, and I appreciate the insight.

I was super hyped for LBP when it came out, and was thoroughly disappointed.

I would argue that Halo 2 perfected everything that needed to b perfected; Halo 3 is where they began to complicate it.

And I don't personally believe any of those games are worthy of perfect score, but I could see some people arguing vehemently against that notion. Though truth be told, I have no idea what people see in the Mario games. He jumps on stuff, and he gotten a new gimmick in each new game since 6th Gen (Water Pack in Sunshine, King Kai's planet in Galaxy 1&2, and now hijacking airplanes enemies).

Nintendo is bringing their A game this time with the Switch.

I hope they keep it that way, they are marvelous as a developer but they were way too lazy last gen.

With this year alone, they have earned my trust and i will be buying the console when the Mario bundle comes out.

The Switch will have a place besides my beloved PS4.

Score is unsurprising, what I'm interested in seeing is if there's more to why they're giving it such great scores besides it being Mario but with bigger scope/budget. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great game, but I just don't see what makes it the god tier 10/10 game that many claim it to be.

Did I miss something, has this game already released?

You're talking as if we've all already had a chance to play and finish the game, but all we're looking at is one leaked review socre.

You must of missed the many trailers gameplay and impressions. There's plenty of info to form an educated opinion with now.

Everyone is talking like that, myself and those saying it's a 10/10.

You could say that for any game. At the end of the day these reviews are all opinions. You're 10 out of 10 is different to the next person's 10 out of 10.

And plus they played, finished and analysed it more than you have.

Uh no, not every game is a Mario game. If a non-Mario game gets a 10/10, it being a Mario game obviously can't be a reason for the score.
