Forums - General - Disney CEO talks about launching their own streaming service

Not sure if this will be the one, but we're going to come to a point where these things start to fail. Having it split so much means people are going to have to pick and choose what they get, since there's just no way to afford them all. Personally, I have Vue, Amazon Prime, and Netflix, and that's all I'm sticking with.

Didn't you hear about the Star Trek Discovery controversy. It's only available on CBS all access (streaming, it's not airing) in the USA to help launch their own streaming service. It's still on Space channel in Canada (although that's a premium channel), can't get it on regular channels.

I think that alot of those single channel streaming services will die out after a bit because they can't offer enough content to warrant the price and there's just too many. It's why all-in-one streaming services like netflix will become the new cable tv and alot of those channels will give in to it.

I don't understand why cable companies aren't more forward thinking with streaming. They're isps as well, yet their streaming service is archaic, with vcr controls locked out to make you watch commercials. Maybe they can't legally, but if I were them I would make the whole lot automatically available for streaming when it airs, commercials and all, like a pvr on steroids. I guess the infrastructure is still not up to the task of streaming to all customers. Plus the networks are probably the ones that don't want people to ffwd commercials.

The movie industry should follow the lead of gaming platforms like steam or origin where your registration is free and you buy per item. Maybe even consolidate into one superplatform like the android playstore. Few people will buy more than one subscription, but the would be willing to shop for individual movies and shows.

Amazon Video does that (having Prime just grants you access to some stuff with no additional payment), and so does Vudu. Heck, PlayStation Video does, as well.

The prices are pretty high though, and having movie licenses in different places is even less appealing. I don't even bother with all the digital copies from different services that come with blu-rays, way too inconvenient. Most of them are probably expired too by now if the service still exists even.

Currently Amazon Prime is twisting my arm. I want to buy a physical movie yet it says it's exclusively reserved for Prime members. Actually it lets me go all the way to the place order screen with no clue if I'll actually get it or if it will automatically sign me up for Prime. I hate these scummy practices. I guess I'll email them if I'm allowed to buy it.... ugh.

Edit: I guess it was a bug, now it disappeared from my cart and I can only add it to my wish list. Whatever, don't want it that bad anyway.

The world doesn't need another streaming service. What started out as a good concept "streaming" is quickly turning into a bad one because it's actually making the viewing experience more cumbersome and less convenient than traditional TV. Once you start paying for all these services, you've got a $30.00/$40.00 bill or more a month and it's all splintered across varying places and apps. It just becomes a pain in the ass imo.

I'd rather pay for full TV and get it all in one little place.

It's a matter of convenience for me.  If I want to start watching a new series I can binge watch.  I know by buddies cable had SOME on demand shows, the rest of it you would have to record if you want to watch them when it is convienient  or [shudders] make sure you have an hour or a half every week where you can sit in front of the TV and watch your show when it airs, commercials and all.

I've got a smart TV so after linking each account to it you just switch apps and start watching the new Tick on Prime, then flip over to Netflix and watch a couple episodes of Ozark, then over to Hulu to watch last night's episode of The Goldbergs. It is pretty easy and seamless for me.  Honestly it is the same reason I'm not terribly opposed to digital copies of games and why i always get digital copy included when buying physical movies. Most of the movies I've bought in the last year still sit shrink wrapped because they were immediately available on Vudu after i bought them in the store.  Exceptions to that would be Dr. Strange or other movies that are bought partially because they are eye candy and I don't want any compression compromising the video.

It's not convenient when it's spread across 5 fucking apps lol.

Do you also find your phone inconvernient? your PC? or do you have one program on each that does everything? It is so terribly dificult to hit 1 botton then scroll to another app and hit enter...again no different than the PS3 or PS4 where you go to your home screen and scroll to a different game then launch it. If you were entering login credentials each time you switched that might be a different story but that isn't a necessary step.

It's not that bad anymore. The recorders got quite smart, record the whole series for you, figure out by themselves to find the new episodes and can record upto 8 things simultaneously. The advantage being that you can always ffwd through commercials. More and more streams nowadays lock you into watching commercials. A unified guide is quite handy, plus it still airs first before it becomes available for streaming. It's no different than waiting on a streaming service to add a new episode every week.

I already find it a waste of time to browse through Netflix' catalog, can't imagine browsing through multiple stream services to find anything likeable, then have to remember what service it was under. I have all the apps as well on the tv, yet hitting list on the pvr has it all together in one place.

I guess at some point there will be an app to combine all the streaming services you use, coming full circle, except now you're paying every network seperately while they can make you pay extra to allow you to skip commercials.

How much was your DVR(or are you leasing)? How much is your cable bill per month? Do you find fast forwarding through commercials immersion breaking?

Atm we're paying CAD 90 a month, which includes leasing the pvr and remote terminal (for the bed room), premium channel package (way too many but it includes the channels my wife and I like). To compare, unlimited internet access starts at CAD 100 a month.

Ofcourse it's immersion breaking, better than not being able to fast forward though. While watching shows on Netflix I still notice the weird breaks where the commercials are supposed to be. One benefit of ffwding commercials is an excuse to get up for a drink or bathroom break. When we're watching Netflix it never feels like the right moment to pause it.

I can understand it but meanwhile the consumers are getting fucked again. We're going from one central hub of video content (cable TV) to a more and more fragmented market. Who in their right mind would subscribe to three or four streaming services?

People already do that. I'm subscribed to Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Amazon.

Well I just cancelled my Netflix account. Like the second time in the last two years they have risen prices and that's it for me.

I'll subscribe for 1 month a year probably and do some binge watching that month of all their shows I like. But I'm tired of this streaming price gouging. There are more and more streaming services which should decrease prices seeing as competition, but it seems to be opposite. Not to mention I'm 100% sure I know the reasoning behind the raised Netflix price.

Free Netflix phone deals. There is one phone carrier that is giving away Netflix accounts and to cover that I'm sure Netflix is raising prices on its current members.

How much does that cost you per month? I reckon it can't be cheap?
