Forums - Nintendo - NPD: Switch US retail SW on pace to be biggest Nintendo launch year on record

Even stronger than the Wii days?

Usually consoles lauch near the end of the year, meaning its launch year is ~2 months or so.

Switch launched in march right? so its going to have 9-10 months of sales, and its had a big zelda title and a real 3D mario game in its first year.

It just makes sense its the biggest launch year for them.

What does he mean by "launch year"? Does he just mean until the end of the calendar year? If that's the case, then Switch's only legitimate competition are 3DS and GBA, which were on the market for 10 and 7 months of their first years, respectively, while Switch has 10 months. All other Nintendo consoles since 1995 launched in the second half of the year.

Correct, he means on calendar year.

A clarification, if possible: by "launch year" you mean merely the year itself or the first 12 months, right? What I mean is [...]

Calendar year.

I took launch year to literally mean 12 months after launch.

Oh so its calender year?Ugh, so that doesnt mean much, since many Nintendo console launch later in the year.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Oh dang! And people thought The Switch would be doom!

Glad a "handheld" is kicking ass in the US!

Pocky Lover Boy!

If it's comparing 10 months for Switch to less barely over 1 month for Wii, then I'm pretty sure Switch has already outsold Wii's 'first year.' Wii had shipped 1.25 million units to the Americas by December 31, 2006, while Switch has already crossed the 2 million mark in NA by Vchartz tracking even though Vchartz is a month and a half behind.

Mat is a moron.

All we can get from this is that the Switch is performing a lot better than 3DS and GBA (which didn't even have digital sales, which are left unaccounted for Switch)

It strikes me as quite possible for Switch to take the 12 month record too (if they can address shortages) but yes, this seems like NPD looking for big tweet.
