I don't think Brawl stands a chance. It came out early in the year and has never really been a series known for being GOTY material.

In my opinion, it won't be a mainstream game that we're all expecting. Perhaps a new series will pop up under our noses and surprise us. Don't just guess random games that are selling well.
You make a good point about Brawl. I thought Rock Band got robbed from GOTY contendership by many publications just because it was a rhythm game. Considering that by this gen's end we'll probably look back and see Guitar Hero and Rock Band being what defined this generation it's funny that neither has ever gotten any GOTY awards.

How can Guitar Hero define this generation if it's been coming out for PS2 since before the 360 came out?

On topic, it sounds like MGS4 to me as of right now.

It doesn't matter when a series was created when deciding if it defined a generation. GTA III partly defined last generation but has it's roots in the PSOne. A few issues ago in Game Informer they had a small article showing each generation and what defined them for consoles. Here's what they said:

Arcade Era: Space Invaders and Pac Man
8-bit: Super Mario Bros and the Legend of Zelda
16-bit: Super Mario World, Sonic the Hedgehog and EA Sports
32/64-bit: No clear winner. They describe it as a fallen king with many successors fighting over the crown. They name games like Gran Turismo, Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid, GoldenEye 007, and Ocarina of Time vying for the crown with no clear cut winners.
128-bit: Halo, Grand Theft Auto and Madden

Now this gen I think would be defined by the war between Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

Tag: Became a freaking mod and a complete douche, coincidentally, at the same time.

Yeah, it's not like the greatest game of all time didn't come out in that era, Ocarina of Time (even if you don't like the game you have to respect it).  Definately no winner there.

The article wasn't only about critical reception. It had to do with how influential the title was also. They say genres splintering off and too many innovations by mainstream titles kept it "Contested". You would have to read it to understand what I mean, but it made sense why there was no clear cut winner in their eyes that gen. It was in the February issue with Resistance 2 on the cover. All of the following games were mentioned to be the ones contesting, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, GoldenEye 007, Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Smash Bros.

I doubt Starcraft 2 will be even in the top 10 review scores this year.  You have to remember that reviewers are extremely harsh on games that don't change that much from their predecessors.  Don't get me wrong, I don't want Starcraft 2 to reinvent the wheel.  I want it to be exactly what it looks like it will be: Starcraft perfected, but reviewers don't want that.  Also, Spore could be reviewed anywhere.  Hyped games that have long dev cycles can get anything from 6s to 9s.

easily Wii Fit
most innovative game this year

Starcraft 2 can't improve the core gameplay much, since it's already perfect. But Blizzard are definitely and vastly improving the single-player part with a unique "point and click adventure" approach, which is unexistant outside the adventure genre.

Here's SC2's features from the main site:

  • Fast-paced, hard-hitting, tightly balanced competitive real-time strategy gameplay that recaptures and improves on the magic of the original game
  • Three completely distinct races: Protoss, Terran, and Zerg
  • New units and gameplay mechanics further distinguish each race
  • Groundbreaking single-player campaign
  • Vibrant new 3D-graphics engine with support for dazzling visual effects and massive unit and army sizes
  • Full multiplayer support, with new competitive features and matchmaking utilities available through Battle.net
  • Full map-making and scripting tools to give players incredible freedom in customizing and personalizing their gameplay experience

Starcraft 2 = Evolution (if Blizzard pulls it, which I'm 99% certain they will)

The game probably won't come out this year sure, but if it did come, MGS4 nor GTAIV nor SSBB would stand a chance.

And your logic is faulty. It's all about how the game is delivered, and under what circumstances. Halo, Final Fantasy, GTA, Super Smash Bros, Metal Gear Solid are franchises that have barely innovated (or even evoluted) with almost every successive title, yet they get high marks. And average reviews don't tell the hole story, especially if we're talking hyped games (cough cough Oblivion cough)

As for SPORE, yes it could be reviewed anywhere like any other game, but the difference is Will Wright's genius. All the footages shown have impressed me so much that I, a Blizzard fan, am more excited for SPORE than SC2. And I'm not even a the sims fan.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHA

I'm sorry, did you really just seriously post back of the box text or website hype text seriously thinking it means something? Man, if you didn't that was one awesome joke.

All that text is hype and nothing else. If you really don't believe me, read this (removed the name for the moment):

  • Classic X-Game Gameplay! That's right, you can play X-Gameo just like any other X-Game. But if you want some intense closeup action, try the "first-person bomber" point of view.
  • 99 Challenging levels. Do you have the stamina to "iron man" it through every stage? Make it happen for some well-earned achievement points!
  • Eight player mayhem! Duke it out with seven other live opponents via Xbox Live!
  • High Definition graphics! That's right X-Game supports 1080i resolution, so bust our your television and play this baby in hi-def!
  • WOW! That sounds awesome doesn't it? You know what game that's for? Bomberman Act: Zero. All that text taken directly from the official website.

So yeah, don't bring the back of the box buzz word filled spew here expecting it to be taken seriously.

And yeah, Nazna is right, Starcraft 2 will more than likely be incredible but it won't be GOTY. It isn't going to change significantly, it's just going to be the same old Starcraft which isn't a bad thing in any way at all. It's going to be just like when Brood War came out.

    -edit-

It's like 20 minutes later and I'm still laughing about this.  Groundbreaking single player campaign!
