I just love the art direction in this kingdom!

Update: another look at Super Mario Odyssey's Luncheon Kingdom

Still looks awesome. Has the same feel as SM64. Still, I could pass on the hat mind rape mechanic.

I dunno it looks to me most closest to Super Mario Sunshine, which is easily my least favorite Mario game.

I think 3D World gets a bad rap mainly because Nintendo decided to release it so close to 3D Land. I'll give this a go though, it looks unique, but I'm worried there's not much platforming here.

2:23 to 2:27 on Video 2. Holy shit Kreygasm. Speedruns for this game are going to be glorious. Finally the developers have showcased the hat mechanic as actually being a useful platform tool midair. Fuck yeah.

Really? I feel like it just presents so many additional possibilities, from clever platforming to puzzle solving.

Unfortunately, I doubt they'll include many puzzles that are actually difficult, as it is a Mario game after all... things like this (as well as my experiences in BotW) make me reeeeeeally wish Nintendo's games had access to the modding community, but they'd never allow that. I've no doubt the game will be awesome on its own, but the pieces are all there to make it the sort of game that can be modded 100+ times to remain fresh indefinitely.

You and I know what clever puzzle solving means in a Mario game. "Oh, a high ledge, I wonder how I can get up there. Oh look, a creature that can jump really high is right net to the ledge. I wonder what I could do here".

SM64 was fine enough with a very limited amount of power ups. I think being able to mind control everything is absolute overkill and may in fact make puzzles way too easy. If you give the player to much choice, he's going to abuse it. I think it should be first and formost a platformer. With so many different possible mechanics it turns into some kind of 3rd person action game.

Reminds me much more of 64 than Sunshine, as it has the former's varied worlds and more adventurous tone. Sunshine is my least fav 3D Mario also.

I think the backlash against 3D World was more that, as the first 3D Mario on HD tier hardware, players wanted something more ambitious and impressive rather than the very simple and conservative game we got. Odyssey is basically what 3DW should have been, IMO.

I really like the looks of that world.

The game looks so gloriously fun, I wish I could play it right now.
