Forums - Gaming - MS wants to work with Sony to bring the "Better Together" Minecraft update to PS4

According to a FAQ released for the upcoming "Better Together" Minecraft update, Microsoft wants to bring it to PlayStation 4 and wants to work with Sony, it also confirms that Microsoft is indeed in negotiations with Sony: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/better-together-faq

Q: Will the new version be available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch?

A: While we are thrilled to be able to confirm the new version of Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch, we are still in discussions with Sony about PlayStation and have nothing to confirm. We would love to work with Sony to bring players on PlayStation 4 into this ecosystem as well.

as long as it requires that they sign in with XBL it wont happen. and while i am all for cross platform play, i really understand sony not wanting to do it if it requires XBL sign in.

Sony should just get on with it and allow it. Stop with the silly politics as it only harms Gamers.

Cross-platform play would be really cool, the PS4 is my main console, I don't see why other PS4 owners would just not want it.

I don't get the big deal about XBL sign in and that's not even what Sony said it was about. If was about that then why not allow cross-play with games which don't use Xbox Live? Why won't they not allow games like rocket league to cross-play with Switch and Xbox One?

I know it's their decision and they have the right to do what they want, but this isn't for the best interests of consumers, it's not for the players and I do know there are a lot of people upset about this and not taking it well with Sony while I read through yt comment sections on videos explaining the better together update so I knew what it exactly was, as they won't be able to experience this new version of Minecraft on PS4.

They've never said (have they?) why Rocket League isn't cross play between Xbox and PS4, the reason might be because MS want PS4 users to sign in to Xbox Live. Yet it and many other games are cross play between PC and PS4 and no one cared. Even more cross play between PS4 and PC are coming soon.

Wait... new version of Minecraft? Would MS be so petty to hold a new version of Minecraft to ransom over cross play?

Hmm, pie.

Like XBL is Microsoft's, Rocket League have their own servers for online play - they'd have nothing to do with XBL, the people at Rocket League have even stated it's as simple as flipping a switch they could allow cross-play with all platforms right now if Sony would let them. When Rocket League arrives on Switch, Switch player aren't going to have to sign into XBL and Xbox players aren't going to have to sign into a Nintendo account.

Also, If you knew more about it you'd know why it would be work or what they are trying to do with it. But to give a quick reasoning - the whole point of it is that no matter what platform you are on it's the same and you can connect to anyone on it, that's why it's simply called 'Minecraft' with no editions in the name. This version is just bulit up with every version connected together and the same, they'd have to completey re-work that, and give it a name with the edition in it. Plus we don't know if they're not going to that eventually, but they're just not going to go through that now and focus on the version that is coming.

But are they playing together? There's got to be more to it than Sony holding a grudge during the PS3 era when MS said no which in turn mean FF14 didn't end up on the console.

Until they give a reason, we can't assume it's as simple as them being a bit moody/arrogant.

They have a give a reason - https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/15/15807138/sony-playstation-cross-network-play-xbox-block-response

And that's why people are assuming exactly that.
